One of my mates Len Bytheway lent me one of those spiffy Turks head mandrels from jigpro to have a go at. Unfortunately I caught the bug. Also unfortunately there was no way I could justify $100 to buy one so after a few hours of failed designing with the 3D printer I decided to go back to basics and make a mandrel by hand. Pretty happy with the results. (on an aside, I don't want to touch my Dremel again for at least 4 weeks).

As you may be aware I don't just make things in Leather. Over the last 2 weeks I have been making a Letterbox. It is finally at the stage where I am happy to share its progress. I still need to make a box for letters in the raised hand and a brass banana for the other but you get the idea. Don't worry he will be painted appropriately before installation.

I started making him again yesterday after an operational pause. Unfortunately I had to down tools for a week as I managed to burn the inside of my right arm on his shoes (don't ask 🤦‍♂️) so I figured I should let everything heal up before sparking up the welder again.

Today's project started out as a simple circular bag which has now evolved into a simple circular bag with a 3D formed skull bursting out of the side. I'm making the skull first. There is a 3d printed form underneath which I have formed with leather. The print will remain in place to give it structure. The leather is 1mm natural veg tan cowhide

Still more work to do but I need to let it dry and stiffen up before I re-wet the eyes and try and get them a bit deeper

Decided to make a backpack for the youngest. I made one out of leather for his brother 3 years ago that is still going strong so decided to go for a leather and canvas option this time so he could have a zipper. Pretty happy with the results. Everything except for 1 leather panel was made out of scraps I had lying around the place
