πŸ”’ Generate, store, and use your own power!

The big power companies told you that joining a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) was the future. Then they built massive, utility-scale batteries to control the market.

Now, those extreme VPP payouts have shrunk, and corporate operators still get to decide when to drain your battery. Even after investing in a home battery, you are back to selling your power cheap and buying it back for more later on.

---

πŸ”‹ Why True Off-Grid Beats a VPP:

⚑ 100% Power Retention | Stop selling your power back to the grid for peanuts. Use every single kilowatt-hour to run your home and charge your EV for free.

πŸ›‘οΈ Total Sovereignty | No VPP operator dipping into your storage when the grid gets stressed. Your power stays in your home, where it belongs.

πŸ’° Zero Utility Bills | Say goodbye to daily supply charges, network delivery fees, and retail spikes forever.

🌐 Micro-Grid Engineering | Scale up from a single property to a localized micro-grid, linking multiple buildings or workshops into one resilient, independent power network.

πŸ’‘ What Actually Happens to Your Solar During a Blackout

Here's a question we get heaps: "If the grid goes down, does my solar still work?"

The short answer: it depends on your setup.

πŸ”‹ Grid-tied systems with battery backup:
If you have a battery system, it kicks in automatically when the grid drops. You keep powered β€” the sun even recharges your battery during the day. Size your battery right and you could run for days.

πŸ”‹ Grid-tied systems WITHOUT battery:
Most standard grid-tied inverters shut off completely during an outage β€” this is a safety requirement (so line workers don't get zapped). Your panels sit idle until grid power returns.

πŸ”‹ Off-grid systems:
You're completely independent. Blackouts are just... Tuesday. Your solar charges your batteries, batteries run your home. No drama.

The takeaway: if blackout resilience matters to you, battery backup is the key. We stock Victron inverters, Pylontech batteries, and can spec a system to match your needs β€” whether you're backup-power ready or going full off-grid.

πŸ’‘ How Solar & Batteries Actually Work Together

Wondering why your solar system needs a battery? Here's the deal…

Solar panels only produce power when the sun is shining. But most households use the MOST power in the morning and evening β€” when the sun isn't at its peak (or at all).

That's where batteries come in.

During the day, your solar charges the battery instead of exporting excess to the grid for peanuts. Then at night, you draw from that stored power instead of buying from the grid at premium rates.

For off-grid setups, this is non-negotiable. You need enough battery capacity to get through 12-14 hours of darkness. For grid-tied homes with battery backup, a well-sized system can slash your grid dependence by 70-80%.

We supply Victron inverters paired with quality LiFePO4 batteries β€” from 5kWh units for tiny homes up to 20kWh+ setups for full off-grid houses. We also have micro-grid cabinets for larger properties needing serious storage.

Things on Your Farm That Don't Need Petrol Or Diesel!

Ever looked at something on your property and thought "there's got to be a better way than running fuel for this"? Us too. Here's what solar can actually run on a farm:

πŸ„ Electric Fencing β€” Keep your fences hot without the the grid. Solar and batteries keeps energisers running 24/7.

πŸ’§ Water Pumping β€” Verdant Solar pumps pull water from dams/bores straight from the sun. No fuel, no fire risk; just water when you need it the most.

πŸ”¦ Shed Power β€” Lights, tools, phone charger, radio. All the little things that make after-work hours bearable β€” powered by panels on the roof.

πŸ“Ή Security Cameras β€” Remote gates, silos, yards. See what's happening without running power lines to the middle of nowhere.

πŸšͺ Gate Openers β€” Solar-powered automatic gates. No more getting out of the car a hundred times a day.

πŸ”‹ Backup Power β€” Keep the essentials running when the grid goes down. Fridge, lights, comms β€” covered.

πŸ”Œ Portable Power β€” The eTrailer brings power anywhere. Fencing, pumping, tools β€” take it where the work is.

The best part? Alt-Tech can build a system for any of these. From panels at $50 to full off-grid setups. Tell us what you're trying to power β€” we'll tell you what you need.

πŸ’‘ How Solar Panel Angle Affects Your Power Production

At Wagga's latitude (35Β°S), the optimal year-round tilt is around 30-35Β°. Here's how it changes through the year:

Summer: Sun is high, so flatter panels (20Β°) capture more light. Fixed systems use a compromise β€” that's fine.

Winter: Sun stays low. Steeper angles (35-40Β°) catch more winter sun. Flat panels in winter can mean 10-15% less output.

If you're unable to adjust seasonally β€” a fixed compromise of 25-30Β° works reasonably well year-round. If you can adjust, expect 5-10% more winter power.

The cleaning factor:

β€’ Dust: 10-25% efficiency loss
β€’ Mould: common in colder months, especially under trees
β€’ Leaves: can block panels entirely

Cleaning panels 2-3 times a year (spring and autumn) recovers significant production.

Need new panels? Alt-Tech supplies high-efficiency solar panels, batteries and full off-grid systems.

πŸ“° Battery Rebate Dropped β€” What It Means for You

The federal battery rebate changed on May 1. If you've been considering battery storage, here's what you need to know.

The change: The rebate dropped from ~$450 per kWh to around $252 per kWh. For a typical 13kWh battery, that's gone from about $3,360 off to around $2,720. Still significant β€” but if you're waiting, every month you wait costs you money.

What this means for you:
If you're on solar, a battery lets you store that excess power you're generating during the day and use it at night β€” when electricity is most expensive. With power prices still high and set to stay that way through winter, batteries are becoming essential, not optional.

Energy saving tip:
Check your usage patterns. Most households use most power between 4pm-9pm. If your solar is production-heavy during midday, you're likely exporting cheap power and buying it back expensive. A battery fixes that gap.

How Alt-Tech helps:
We supply Victron and LiFePO4 battery systems, micro-grid cabinets, and full off-grid kits β€” new, second-life, and refurbished options to suit every budget. Whether you're starting small or going full independence, we can spec something for you.
