Lest we Forget.

On this day in 1915, Australian Light Horsemen charged at the Nek during the Gallipoli Campaign.

The dismounted cavalrymen launched themselves against well-prepared Ottoman defences in one of the campaign's most tragic assaults. In just 15 minutes, the Anzacs suffered 372 casualties. Though the attack ended in victory for the Ottoman Empire, the courage and sacrifice of those who served has never been forgotten.

Today, we remember all those who fought at the Nek.

Remembering those who served at RAF Breighton at Breighton’s 1940s Weekend ‘G for George’ on the 15th-16th August 2026 - The G-George Lancaster flew 90 operational sorties over occupied Europe. Most operational Lancasters were shot down before they had reached 20 sorties. G-George has the added distinction of bringing home, alive, every crewman who flew aboard it. It’s now preserved in the Australian Imperial War Museum as a symbol of remembrance to the Australians who served in Bomber Command during WW2. 📸 Ground Crew at RAF Breighton 1943.

Lest we Forget

Today we remember the Battle of Lone Pine, fought at Gallipoli from 6 to 10 August 1915.

As the evening sun blinded the Ottoman defenders, Australian troops charged across no man's land and into heavily fortified trenches. Finding many of the enemy positions covered by timber roofs, they fought from above before breaking through into the trenches below, where fierce hand-to-hand fighting raged for days.

The Australians held their ground against repeated counterattacks, but the victory came at a terrible cost, with more than 2,300 Australians and 6,000 Turks killed or wounded.

For the extraordinary courage displayed at Lone Pine, seven Australians were awarded the Victoria Cross – the highest number awarded to Australians for a single action.

Today, we remember their bravery, sacrifice and unwavering resolve.
