*** COMING SOON ***

Our latest upgrade for our Weather Maestro weather stations is about to be released. Very soon you will be able to add multiple remote sensors all connecting wirelessly to the main Weather Maestro unit.

Our Distributed Sensing system allows you to expand your weather monitoring to a wider area than the main weather station location, without having to add full weather stations to each of those locations.

In the initial release of distributed sensing, you will be able to add up to 4 remote units, each with 1 or 2 sensors. This is a great benefit if you need to know rainfall, temperature, soil moisture or other parameters at more than one location at your site.

Remote sensors are solar powered and must have direct line of sight access to the weather station – up to 5 kilometres.

If your property has unique microenvironments, or simply receives variable rainfall rates in different areas, then the ability to place additional sensors in these locations – with no cabling required - is going to be a game changer for you. Stay tuned for more information on Distributed Sensing over the coming months!

We recently introduced our latest product, the LRG70 Logging Rain Gauge.

The LRG70 was designed for people who have the requirement to only monitor and record rainfall, and who are after a cost-effective solution which handles the harsh Australian climate.

The LRG70 installs onto a single instrument mast, this reduces the overall footprint of the station, whilst still maintaining a rugged and very accurate Australian Standard compliant tipping bucket rain gauge with a dedicated single-channel data logger.

The rain gauge includes a stainless-steel levelling bracket and integrated bullseye to ensure accurate levelling.

The station is solar powered and includes a back-up rechargeable battery and a cellular modem built into the weatherproof logger housing.

In one of our recent posts we showed you a Weather Maestro 10-metre mast weather station we installed which included a Class A Evaporation Pan.

The Class A pan and the sensor provide water level data to the logger which calculates the evaporation rate. Inside the housing, a float and counterweight are attached to opposite ends of a chain. The chain sits directly on a sprocket. As the float moves up and down with the water level, a sensor detects the movement of the sprocket and sends this data to the data logger.

It’s important to maintain any compound in which your weather station and sensors are located. The images below show a Weather Maestro weather station with an Evaporation Pan which requires more frequent maintenance. A reduced rate of maintenance on an evap pan allows vegetation and algae to eventually take over. Algae and vegetation can block the system which has a detrimental effect on your evaporation data.

In one of the images, you will see salt crystals growing on the chain (inside the sensor housing). In some cases, there has been enough debris to derail the chain from the sprocket rendering the sensor non-functional.

Environdata recently installed this Weather Maestro weather station. Our customer has a requirement to monitor evaporation rates and weather data to Australian Standards.

Our customer requested a Class A evaporation pan be installed. As there was no water source available to automatically refill the evaporation pan, a tank was needed to supply fresh water. Our customer was after a complete solution. So, we supplied a 4,000 litre water tank to ensure an ample supply of water was available to refill the pan. A solar powered pump was needed to move water from the tank to the pan, at the correct pressure. To run the pump, a separate solar power system was required. To solve this problem, we installed an 80W solar panel, 45Ah Lithium battery and a solar control module.

To calculate the evaporation rate, a water level sensor on the pan sends water level data directly to the data logger. The Weather Maestro uses this data, and the rain gauge data to calculate the evaporation rate.

Despite having the pan installed, a second method for calculating evaporation was incorporated into the weather station. The second method calculates evaporation using our EV30 Evapotranspiration firmware which is loaded into the DL3110 data logger. The EV30 firmware requires data from a range of sensors located ~2m above ground level.

These sensors are:
Wind Speed
Air Temperature
Relative Humidity
Solar Radiation

For weather monitoring, wind speed and wind direction sensors along with an air temperature sensor were installed onto our IS37 10-metre tilt-mast.

By having air temperature sensors at 2 and 10m above ground level, the temperature data can be used for monitoring temperature inversions. As air rises it typically cools, however, if a layer of warm air sits above the cooler air it acts like a barrier which slows the dispersion of smoke, dust or moisture close to the surface.

To make this wealth of information available, a cellular modem was built into the weather station for data transmission. Due to poor signal reception, a high-gain antenna was fitted to the weather station. The data is streamed to our servers every minute and accessed by the customer using our WeatherMation LIVE Service.

Below is some wind and temperature data from last night’s storm which moved through Warwick, Qld. This intense and powerful storm damaged trees, power lines and caused some structural damage.

During the storm our weather station located on Percy Street in Warwick recorded the following data.

Peak Wind Gust was 92.3km/h at 10-metres above ground level.

The 10-Minute Summary recorded an average wind speed of 57.3km/h at 10-metres above ground level. That’s impressive.

The air temperature suddenly dropped 8.6 DegC as the storm moved through the area.

More storms are expected today, possibly some severe. Stay safe everyone.
