⚠️⚠️⚠️VERY DANGEROUS WEATHER WARNING FOR EXTREME RAIN & MAJOR FLOODING FOR NORTH QLD (CAIRNS TO BOWEN INLAND TO CHARTERS TOWERS)⚠️⚠️⚠️ issued at 12:30pm Friday 31st January. Share and tag family and friends to let them know about this!
🔴At Friday midday a tropical low is located 25kms North of Townsville tracking WEST at 10kms/hr. The system is forecast to continue to track slowly west and cross the coast between Townsville and Cairns today. The low is then expected to stall over North East inland QLD for several days. The low will link to a very strong coastal trough with a huge North West monsoon to Easterly tropical wind convergence along the coast and adjacent inland areas.
🔴Areas of heavy rainfall (50-100mm per hr, 250-500mm per 24hrs) are forecast to develop between Cairns, Townsville, Ayr and Bowen inland just west of the ranges inc Charters Towers from Friday and continue through until at least Tuesday. These rain rates are likely to lead to flash flooding, creek and river flooding given the already primed catchments.
🔴Areas of EXTREME LIFE THREATENING rainfall (100mm+ per hour, 500mm+ per 24hrs) are possible for various locations between Cairns, Townsville, Ayr and Bowen from Friday through until at least Tuesday. These extreme rain rates are likely to lead to Very Dangerous and Life Threatening Flash Flooding of roads, streets, suburbs, towns ect. Rapid rises with major flooding of creeks and rivers possible.
🔴5 day rainfall accumulation totals over 2000mm are possible for some locations between Ayr and Innisfail including Tully, Cardwell, Ingham, Townsville, Palm Island, Giru.
This system has the "potential" to near or break historic flood levels in some places.
🔴For areas from Cairns to Cooktown, Bowen, Whitsundays and Mackay expect rain periods and strong winds with locally heavy falls possible with flash flooding over the next 5 days. 5 day rainfall totals is these areas are between 150-300mm at this stage.
🔴Landslides and mudslides are a high risk along hills and ranges given the waterlogged ground and predicted rainfall.
Damaging northerly to easterly winds 90 - 120kms/hr are possible along the coast and ranges.
Locally DESTRUCTIVE winds over 125kms/hr are possible if isolated waterspouts cross land areas.
🔴There is a genuine risk of inundation of homes and businesses especially those in flood prone areas!
Many roads are expected to be closed including the Bruce HWY for extended periods of time.
Airports may also close for an extended period due to bad weather conditions.
Critical infrastructures may be damaged such as water, power and phone.
