"Sliding or swing gate for my driveway?"

The short answer depends on your site.

Swing gates suit most properties. They cost less and suit both open and solid gates when the right motor is matched.

Sliding gates suit flat or gently sloping driveways, tight spaces where a swing won't clear, and windy sites. They need more prep (track, groundwork) so they cost more.

Spring storms are on the way. Ten minutes at the gate now saves a callout later.

Before storm season:
- Check the enclosure lid seals and cable entries for gaps
- Tidy any loose cabling and clear debris from the motor arms or track
- Test the quick-release pin so you know it works if the power drops
- Look over the solar panel and batteries for damage or grime

We get asked this a lot: "Can I automate the gate I've already got, or do I need a new one?"

Short answer: usually, yes.

If the posts are solid and concreted in, and the gate itself isn't sagging or twisted, we can add a motor to what's already there. What decides which motor:
- Open, tubular or post-and-rail gates suit an arm-style opener
- Solid infill (Colorbond, timber-clad, sheet metal) needs a heavier-duty linear motor

Autumn is the time to give your gate setup a once-over before winter hits.

Three quick checks that save callouts later:

1. Wipe down the solar panel. Dust, leaves and bird mess are the biggest reason batteries underperform heading into winter.
2. Clear the slide track. A few stones or twigs is all it takes to make the motor work twice as hard.
3. Check the battery is still holding charge — shorter days mean less solar in, so a tired battery shows up fast in June.

Ten minutes now beats a stuck gate on a wet July morning.

Heading into winter? Now's the time to give your gate a once-over.

Cold mornings, shorter days and dirty solar panels are the three things that put gate motors out of action through June and July.

Five-minute autumn checklist:
- Wipe down the solar panel — even a thin layer of dust drops charge by 20–30%
- Check the battery age (most AGMs last 3–5 years — if yours is older, plan a swap before the cold hits)
- Clear leaves and debris from the slide track or hinge points
- Test the manual quick release pin so you know it works if the power drops out
- Run the gate through 5–6 cycles and listen for any new noises

Sort it now and you'll get through winter without a 6am phone call from someone stuck at the gate.
