Baines Concrete

Baines Concrete Baines Concrete delivers premium concrete products to you when we say we will. Our focus is local Both operations have been in continuous operation since then.

The Baines company dates back to 1947 when seventeen-year-old John Baines built his own truck from an ex-World War II Blitz vehicle. His business grew in many directions, concentrating on haulage of bulk materials including coal, coke, sand and aggregates. He diversified into motor vehicle cartage between Sydney and Wollongong. The company’s focus through the 1960s and 1970s was on plant and equip

ment hire, including initial civil works for Westcliff Colliery, civil works for other collieries and winning sand and clay for local brickworks. By the mid-1970s, John needed a larger premises for his growing fleet and purchased land in Woonona from Bulli Brickworks. A few years later in 1978, with the help of good friend Dave David, John moved into concrete manufacture at the Woonona site. With the success of this venture, and seeing the need for a local manufacturing plant at Helensburgh, he built a new factory there. In 1982, he purchased the fledgeling masonry operator Colorstone at Appin, to which he added a further pre-mixed concrete plant. Over the past thirty years, the masonry operation has grown into a highly automated competitor in the New South Wales market, supplying a blend of masonry, paving and its own patented range of retaining wall blocks. The same high standards of product quality and service are a hallmark of the Baines Masonry operation and a reflection of the standard set by John. The Baines group of companies remains essentially a family company, with three generations of the Baines family actively involved with its businesses, as well as two generations of a number of its early employees. We continue to take great pride and satisfaction in our quality of both product and service.

Funny the things that you notice when scrolling on social media.
Triple C beef is a remote cattle station near Charters Towers in North Queensland.
When I contacted them they said that it’s been a great old truck that’s poured a lot of concrete for them over the years 😊

Dear Customer,

Baines Concrete Closure
We regret to inform you that Baines Concrete will be closing its operations permanently as of 31 October 2024. Baines Concrete has been supplying Ready-mix concrete to the building and construction industry in the Illawarra for more than 45 years and is extremely proud of our achievements. It has been a very difficult decision to make, and one that has not been taken lightly.
Despite our best efforts to sustain the business, the ongoing economic conditions have forced us to make this difficult decision. Our primary focus is to ensure a smooth transition for our clients, suppliers, and partners alike. We are committed to fulfilling any outstanding obligations to the best of our abilities before the closure date. In the coming weeks, our team will be reaching out to you to discuss the transition.
We want to extend our deepest appreciation for your partnership with Baines Concrete throughout the years. We wish you every success in your continuing business activities.
Should you have any questions or concerns related to this, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Yours Sincerely,

Bill Hudson
General Manager

A few photos from the past. John Baines bought his first truck at the young age of just 17 in 1947. He modified it himself to suit an opportunity he saw and was a success from then on. An entrepreneur, he tried his hand at several industries before he and good friend Dave David built the existing concrete plant at the Woonona site. John expanded into Helensburgh with another concrete plant and bought out a masonry block business in Appin, making it a success as well. The business is still family owned.

How do you pump concrete 270 meters from the agi over wet ground? Buy good concrete, get well maintained pumps and then have a good plan. Garth, owner of GPS concrete pumping and his team, Seth, Levi and Ricky, with help from Clint and his team, Shorty, Todd and David at Phoenix concrete Pumping worked together with Baines and our premium concrete and all went to plan. Our agi pulled up to Garths pump, he pumped about 70 meters to the Phoenix pump who pumped similar to the last pump and they pumped to the job. You can see in 3rd photo how spaced out the pumps were.
Adrian was glad to get the massive job done.

Baines's polished concrete mixes are very good. In the right hands polished concrete can take your house to another level. Here is a job Mick Johnstone prepared and poured just before Christmas 2023 in Dunmore. MDJ concrete are responsible for quality installation of concrete all over the Illawarra.
Craig and Shane from CS Polishing in Barrack Heights have polished the floor and Tom is finishing it off. CS Polishing go everywhere and have a showroom to show you different samples.
I know the owner is elated with the result that has been achieved here.
