Small detail, big impact: upgrading wire reliability in MySatKit

🔧🚀 In space engineering, even the smallest detail matters. Especially when that “small detail” is a wire that decides to detach at the most inconvenient possible moment.

In the MySat kit, we use several components with soldered wires: light sensors (photoresistors), status LEDs, and our beloved Star LED. Historically, these were also the most frequent candidates for the “unexpected mechanical failure award”. More information in our video: https://youtube.com/shorts/g4bKCyyA8Iw

Previously, we protected the solder joints using standard heat-shrink tubing. It worked… until curious future engineers (a.k.a. our users 😄) started bending wires with scientific enthusiasm. So we decided to run a series of tests using heat-shrink tubing with an internal adhesive layer.

The results surprised even us:
- More than 10 pull and bending tests
- Joint strength increased to over 5.9 kg
- Standard heat shrink showed ~2–3 kg resistance
- Much better durability under repeated bending cycles In simple terms: it is now significantly harder to accidentally break a wire.

We still do not recommend using MySat as a towing cable though. 😉

Starting from July, all wired connections in MySat will use adhesive-lined heat shrink tubing.

And this is just the beginning. For the upcoming stratospheric version of MySat, we plan to switch to ultra-flexible silicone wires designed to withstand vibration, bending, and the harsh conditions of near-space flight. We’ll share more detailed test results during the development of the stratospheric edition.

MySat Firmware v1.4 Released

After many hours of coding, testing, debugging, and occasionally staring at oscilloscopes hoping they would reveal the secrets of the universe, we’re happy to announce the release of MySat Firmware v1.4.

What’s New?
📝 System Event Logging
MySat can now log system events and export them directly from the Web GUI. Because “something weird happened” is not a very useful engineering report.

📡 Telemetry Frame Counter
Added telemetry frame counting to help monitor communications and data transmission.

🗂️ Mission Data Management
You can now clear mission data CSV files directly from the interface. Sometimes the best debugging tool is a clean slate.

🌐 Web GUI Updates
Added a mission data logging status indicator so you’ll always know whether data is being recorded – or whether your satellite is silently judging you.

About That Radio Module Bug…
We’ve spent the last few weeks investigating an annoying issue where the radio module unexpectedly shuts down after several minutes when running on battery power.

The strange part? When powered via USB-C, everything works perfectly.

Our first suspect was the Arduino-based slave controller firmware. Like all good detectives, we followed the evidence, ran experiments, and interrogated every line of code.

The verdict: the firmware appears innocent.

Current evidence points toward a hardware-related issue. The investigation continues, and unlike certain space agencies in science fiction movies, we actually read the telemetry before declaring victory.

We’ll keep the community updated as we learn more.

MySat Factory Tour: Part 2 🛰️
Earlier we showed the room where we 3D-print plastic parts for MySatKit. Today – a little more behind the scenes. We will show two more rooms: our storage/assembly room and our soldering room.

In total, we currently have 5 rooms. But if we show everything at once, people may realize we are actually just slowly converting an entire Soviet factory into a space program 😄

Our “space factory” is located inside an old Soviet factory building. Rent here is about $3 per square meter. The building was supposed to be demolished years ago and replaced with something “modern and shiny,” but first COVID happened, and then russia decided to make the worst startup pitch in history and invaded Ukraine. So the old factory is still standing… and now space technology is being built inside it.

The building has no central heating, so in winter we locally heat each room separately. Sometimes the soldering room is warmer than the CEO’s office 😅

Because of constant missile attacks, we also regularly have problems with water and electricity. So we store water in large bottles, and we built our own parallel electrical network powered by batteries. It keeps our equipment running even during blackouts. ⚡The batteries are located in the 3D printer room – probably the most cyberpunk room in the entire building Honestly, if someone added neon lights and synthwave music, it could become a sci-fi movie set.

The first room is our MySat component storage and assembly room. Here we assemble mechanical parts, prepare kits, and pack all components into boxes before shipping. This is the place where your MySat begins its journey into space… or at least into international postal logistics 😄

This room also contains a small exhibition of our prototypes: stratospheric vehicles, deployers for real CubeSats, and even experimental exoskeletons for space. These exoskeletons do not help astronauts move – they actually make movement harder, adding resistance so astronauts in microgravity lose less bone and muscle mass. So this may be one of the few exoskeletons in the world officially designed to make life more difficult 😅

We had to renovate this room because all MySat parts were getting covered with dust very quickly. We installed the electrical wiring and lighting ourselves, painted the walls, and added a PVC ceiling so orders would arrive to customers as clean as possible. Space is cool, but nobody likes receiving “limited edition lunar dust” inside a package.

The second room is our electronics soldering room. It still has original wooden wall panels that are more than 40 years old. At this point they probably remember the Soviet Union better than most history teachers.

Inside the room there is a Webasto diesel heater and a soldering exhaust system. The room smells slightly like electronics, engineering ambition, and occasionally burned flux.

For electronics assembly we use modern smart soldering irons. They heat up almost instantly, can even run from a power bank, and measure temperature very accurately because the temperature sensor is located directly inside the tip. The soldering tips also require almost no cleaning. And the best part – the soldering irons contain accelerometers. Almost the same type as inside MySat 🛰️ If the soldering iron does not move for several minutes, it automatically disables heating. So even our soldering irons have their own onboard power-saving system. Honestly, some humans should probably have this feature too.

This is what real space technology manufacturing looks like. Not a sterile sci-fi laboratory, but an old factory, soldering irons, printers, batteries, cold walls, and very stubborn people.

And honestly, we kind of like it 🚀
