Here’s a clear strategic comparison between UL 2196 and BS 6387 fire alarm cables.
🔥 1️⃣ UL 2196 – System-Level Fire Resistive Certification
UL 2196 evaluates cables as part of a fire-resistive system, not just as a standalone product.
Key characteristics:
• Tested using the ASTM E119 time-temperature curve
• 2-hour fire exposure
• Includes hose stream test after fire
• Verifies circuit integrity during and after exposure
• Listed under UL FHIT systems
This standard treats the cable like a 2-hour rated wall or floor assembly. It is a construction-level survivability certification.
In simple terms:
UL 2196 confirms the cable can survive a real building fire scenario and remain operational.
🔥 2️⃣ BS 6387 – Performance Under Fire Conditions
BS 6387 evaluates cables under specific fire conditions and assigns performance codes:
• C – Fire only (950°C up to 3 hours)
• W – Fire with water spray
• Z – Fire with mechanical shock
You’ll often see CWZ-rated cables.
This is a performance test, not a fire-resistive construction rating.
It does not include a hose stream test equivalent to building assembly standards.
It confirms:
The cable maintains circuit integrity during defined fire conditions.
But it does not certify the cable as equivalent to a 2-hour fire-rated building element.

From a long-term system integrity and compliance perspective:
If your project follows NFPA-based codes or requires 2-hour survivability:

If your project follows UK/IEC-based specifications:

🎯 My Professional Opinion
If the goal is:

✔ Maximum audit defensibility
✔ Equivalent protection to 2-hour rated construction
✔ High-risk occupancy protection (industrial, RMG, high-rise, critical facilities)
Then UL 2196-listed fire resistive cable is the more robust strategic investment.
BS 6387 cables are good performance-rated products — but UL 2196 provides a higher confidence level when life safety accountability is at stake.
In life safety engineering, “almost equivalent” is not equivalent.
