I. Maintenance Requirements (Section 5.6)
• General Maintenance Principles:
◦ Development of procedures for all maintenance tasks, emphasizing safe work practices (5.6.1).
◦ Requirement for safe procedures for non-routine maintenance (5.6.2).
◦ Specific requirements for hot work procedures and permits to mitigate fire/explosion risks (5.6.3).
◦ Safe application of heat to evaporate residual liquid ammonia, ensuring the area is free of combustibles and flammables (5.6.3.1).
◦ Use of portable maintenance tools with open flames for liquid refrigerant migration, with restrictions on impacting mechanical integrity (5.6.3.2, 5.6.3.2.1).
• Valve Maintenance:
◦ Application of ammonia-compatible lubricant to exposed direct-acting stems and stem-sealing components to prevent corrosion during valve exercise (5.6.5).
◦ Operation of isolation valves according to manufacturers' instructions (5.6.5.1).
◦ Requirement for authorized personnel to operate isolation valves to prevent specific hazards (5.6.5.2).
• System Alarms and Controls:
◦ Management of system alarms during controlled maintenance tasks or inspections, allowing disabling via engineering/administrative controls, with functional testing of affected alarms post-task (5.6.6).
