On April 26, 1986, the world's worst nuclear power plant accident occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine (then Soviet Union). A flawed safety test at Reactor 4 caused an explosion, releasing radioactive material across Europe, prompting a 30,000-person evacuation of Pripyat, and forcing massive, long-term safety and political changes.
