Supporting Multi-Purpose Building
of DPHE @ Cox's Bazar
Principal Architect: Tapon Sarker
Project Architect: Tanveer Hasan Tonmoy
Assistant Architect: Rahamat Ali
Project Brief:
Designed for the Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) in Cox’s Bazar, the multipurpose building adopts a simple yet bold architectural language. Responding to intense solar exposure along the south, east, and west elevations, the primary facade features rhythmically spaced, as-cast concrete vertical fins. These elements function as integrated sun-breakers that significantly reduce energy consumption while establishing a monolithic, solid exterior appearance.
The massing rests on a welcoming ground level defined by a transparent, double-height entry lobby that creates a grand public approach. Internally, the functional program is stacked to accommodate diverse operational needs: three dedicated office floors, a specialized floor for seminars and conferences highlighted by an extruded corner volume, and the top three floors reserved for residential accommodation. Capping the structure is a lush, accessible rooftop garden that softens the monolithic concrete expression and introduces biophilic space overlooking the coastal context.
