105 Years of Earthquake History in Bangladesh (1920–2025): A Spatial Analysis.
I've come across an insightful spatial analysis covering 105 years of earthquake data in Bangladesh, based on USGS seismic records. This map highlights how Bangladesh—though not always in the global spotlight—remains highly vulnerable to seismic hazards due to its proximity to major tectonic fault lines such as the Indo-Burman subduction zone, the Dauki Fault, and the Tripura Fold Belt.
🔍 Key Observations:
1️⃣ Earthquake activity is geographically uneven.
The Sylhet–Mymensingh–Sunamganj–Netrokona belt shows the highest frequency, consistent with its closeness to the Dauki Fault and the Shillong Plateau.
The Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar–Bandarban–Rangamati region remains another major hotspot due to the Indo-Burman ranges.
Central Bangladesh, including the Dhaka–Tangail–Madaripur corridor, experienced multiple moderate events, indicating growing seismic sensitivity.
2️⃣ Magnitude distribution shows significant hazard potential.
Most events fall between M4.0–M5.9, but the map also reveals several M6.0+ earthquakes, especially in the northeast and southeast zones.
These patterns reinforce the need for continuous monitoring and preparedness in densely populated regions like Dhaka and Chattogram.
3️⃣ Historical clustering reveals persistent seismic patterns.
The repeating events across the same districts (Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar) reflect long-term seismic cycles.
Such clusters demand targeted risk reduction interventions, building-code enforcement, and public awareness programs.
4️⃣ GIS mapping helps transform data into decisions by visualizing century-long earthquake history, we can better understand:
• Where high-risk zones are emerging.
• Which districts need stronger preparedness.
• How seismic patterns relate to population density and infrastructure growth.
This kind of analysis is crucial for MEAL, DRR, urban planning & development programming in BANGLADESH.
