Standpipe hose connections should be located outside the required stair egress clearance to avoid obstructing occupant movement. The clearance arc is based on the stair width, projected across the landing. While minor encroachments might be arguable, best practice is to keep all components fully outside the egress path to avoid compliance issues and redesign.

In new construction, structural coordination is typically straightforward. However, in retrofits or irregular stair layouts, beams may conflict with desired standpipe locations. Avoid placing connections where major structural elements (like concrete beams) would require core drilling, as this can compromise structural integrity and require engineer approval.

A minimum of 3 inches of clearance must be provided around the hose valve handle to allow operation by firefighters wearing protective gloves. This ensures accessibility and usability under emergency conditions.

Drain risers are required for testing standpipe systems, especially when pressure-reducing valves are used. The riser must be sized to handle test flow:
โช 3-inch riser for 2ยฝ-inch PRVs
โช 2-inch riser for 1ยฝ-inch PRVs
โช Or sized to accommodate full flow of the largest device
Connections should allow hose attachment for testing.
