Ancient plants basically refer to those plants that ruled the earth billions of years ago. Their existence is known from fossils. The environment at that time was completely different from today, so the plants were also different.
The evolution of ancient plants can be divided into several main eras:
1. Paleozoic era (about 540 - 252 million years ago)
It was during this era that plants came to land from water. The names of some important plant groups are given below:
* Rhyniophytes: These were the earliest land plants, which did not have leaves or roots. Their stems were simple and had branches. Cooksonia is a famous example of this group, which was found in fossils about 420 million years ago.
* Lycophytes: These plants look like today's clubs. Some of their species were large trees, such as Lepidodendron. It could grow up to 30 meters tall and had a snake-like pattern on its trunk.
* Horsetails: Their trunks were divided into pairs. A type of horsetail called Calamites grew abundantly during this period and played a major role in the creation of coal mines.
* Ferns: Ferns are one of the oldest plants that still survive today. However, the ancient ferns were much larger and different from today's ferns.
2. Mesozoic Era (about 252 - 66 million years ago)
Dinosaurs ruled the earth during this period, and Gymnosperms (gymnosperms) evolved during this time.
* Gymnosperms: These were the first seed-producing plants. Their seeds were not covered with a fruit. Some notable plants included in this group:
* Conifers: Trees such as pine, fir, cedar, etc. are part of this group. They usually produce cone-shaped seeds.
* Cycads: They look like palm trees, but they are not related to palm trees. They were very popular during the Mesozoic era.
* Ginkgo: It is known as a "living fossil". A species called Ginkgo biloba still survives. Its leaves look like fans.
3. Cenozoic era (about 66 million years ago to present)
In this era, that is, after the extinction of dinosaurs, Angiosperms or flowering plants spread widely. They have flowers and fruits. The evolution of today's modern flora took place from the beginning of this era.
This history of ancient plants is not just about their shape or structure, but also about their adaptation and survival to changes in the Earth's environment and climate. Fossils tell this story, from which we learn how simple algae evolved into today's complex plant world. The evolution of plants is a long and complex process that has taken place over billions of years. Since the origin of life on Earth, plants have gone through various stages to reach their present form. The main reason for this evolution is adaptation to the environment.
