Subsea Newsletter 281 is now available!

This issue focuses on the future of corrosion protection and hull performance, highlighting how durable, non-toxic coating systems are changing the way shipowners approach maintenance and efficiency .

=> Article 1 – Corrosion Handbook expanded and updated
Subsea Industries has released an expanded edition of its well-known Corrosion Handbook, now titled Corrosion Protection and Ship Hull Performance. The updated book explains how modern hard coating systems improve fuel efficiency, reduce drag, eliminate toxic biocides and provide long-term hull protection through cleanable, durable surfaces (pages 3–4).

=> Article 2 – The future of hull protection
This article explores the advantages of the Ecospeed family of coatings, including:

>Lifelong protection without repeated repainting
>Non-toxic, environmentally responsible performance
>Exceptional abrasion and ice resistance
>Fuel savings through smoother hulls
>Easy underwater cleaning without coating damage
>Elimination of sacrificial anodes

Together, these technologies offer shipowners lower lifecycle costs, improved sustainability and long-term operational efficiency.

Two vessels recently entered drydock after several years in operation. Their rudders had been coated with Ecoshield during newbuild in 2019. Upon inspection, the coating was still fully intact—no cavitation damage, no corrosion, and no need for repair.

Importantly, these are not isolated cases. Several more vessels coated with Ecoshield in 2019 are scheduled to enter drydock soon, and based on consistent past performance, the same results are expected. This growing body of evidence reinforces a clear message: when Ecoshield is applied from the start, damage simply does not occur.

How long should a ship hull coating last? Is it enough for it to stay on the hull for two and a half to five years and be replaced at the next drydocking? Or should it in fact last the life of the ship without the need to repaint, 25 years or more?

Subsea Magazine 280 is now available!

This issue focuses on a key shift in the maritime industry: moving from reactive maintenance to long-term asset protection with advanced coating systems .

=> Article 1 – Why applying Ecoshield at newbuild is the smartest coating investment
Real-world examples show that vessels coated at the newbuild stage enter drydock years later with no cavitation damage, no corrosion, and no need for repair. By protecting steel from day one, shipowners avoid the costly cycle of repeated repairs and reduce drydock time significantly (pages 4–8).
=> Article 2 – Rethinking underwater asset protection
This article explains the industry-wide transition toward durable, non-toxic coating systems that remain intact for decades. Instead of managing damage, operators are adopting solutions that eliminate it, improving efficiency, reducing downtime, and lowering total cost of ownership (page 9 onward).

The comparison chart on page 8 clearly shows the difference: early protection means lower lifecycle costs, shorter drydocks, and predictable maintenance.

How do you protect the hull of one of the world’s largest semisubmersible vessels, in this case LP Odyssey, a rocket launch platform, while accommodating the ship’s 15 year drydocking interval? How do you keep the hull free of fouling for the 15-years period and prevent fouling organisms from penetrating the hull coating down to the steel?

These were all questions taken into consideration when the biocidal antifouling system that had been used for 15 years was replaced in 2012 with a glass platelet reinforced inert, non-toxic coating: Ecolock.
