🦉🌿 Biodiversity in action

Following International Day for Biological Diversity, we continue to see how nature thrives across our sites.

At our Winterswijk site in the Netherlands, a remarkable milestone has been reached. The Eagle Owl nest, created in collaboration with the Forestry Commission and the Oehoe Foundation, has now been active for 16 consecutive years.

Originally supported by the installation of a nesting cavity, the site welcomed its first pair just one year later. Since then, the nest has successfully raised two to three young each year. This year, a mother eagle owl and her three young (born March 2026) are once again calling the former quarry home.

With a wingspan reaching up to almost 2 metres, the Eagle Owl is Europe’s largest owl, a powerful symbol of how well-managed sites can support thriving wildlife.

📸🌿 Capture Nature at Work

On this International Day for Biological Diversity, we are reminded that understanding nature is the first step to protecting it.

At Sibelco, our sites are home to more than just operations, they support ecosystems where nature and industry coexist.

Our internal Wildlife Photography Challenge invites Sibelco employees to capture this biodiversity in their everyday surroundings. From pollinators to landscapes, these moments help us better appreciate our role in protecting nature.

This connection is real. At our Dessel site, 138 pollinator species have been recorded. And recently, our colleague Iracy Nieuwenhuys, Graduate at the Sustainability team joined a biodiversity inventory at our Maasmechelen site with MicoEffect, supporting our ongoing efforts to understand and protect local ecosystems.

📸 Take a look at some of the biodiversity observed on site below.

🌍 Driving nature-informed decision making at Nature Action Dialogues

This week, Sibelco is participating in the Nature Action Dialogues at Jesus College, Cambridge, bringing together businesses, academia and sustainability leaders to explore how data and collaboration can accelerate nature‑positive action.

Our colleague Wies Vanstockem, Manager COE Sustainability, is contributing to several sessions focused on translating nature data into practical business decisions. From interactive workshops using earth observation data to conference discussions on ecosystem accounting, Wies is sharing how Sibelco is already applying these approaches across our sites.

Through collaborations with partners such as VITO, we have developed a system to map ecosystems and their condition, support restoration planning, and strengthen sustainability reporting, turning data into actionable insights.

We are also contributing to the Nature Positive Initiative pilot, sharing real‑world experience on measuring and managing biodiversity at site level.

Engaging in dialogues like these helps us continue building knowledge, strengthening partnerships, and advancing our approach to nature across the business.

From 10-14 May 2026 FIT - Flanders Investment & Trade travels with Flemish companies, knowledge institutions, and policymakers to Istanbul and Ankara for the Belgian Economic Mission led by Her Majesty the Queen and Minister-President Matthias Diependaele.

Our EVP Europe, Middle East Africa Solomon Baumgartner Aviles is joining this high-level program for Sibelco Group, and together with FIT - Flanders Investment & Trade, he will focus on concrete contacts and insights.

The mission centers on trade, investment and industrial cooperation in a market that is becoming increasingly important within Flanders’ diversification strategy and highlighting opportunities in the energy transition, port activities, transport and logistics, health, pharma, life sciences, digitization/industry 4.0, Defense and aeronautics.

Turkey combines a strong industrial base with a strategic location and close economic ties with the EU. For Flemish companies, there are concrete opportunities in logistics, energy, defence, digital technology and industry. At the same time, investment interest is also growing in the opposite direction: Turkish companies are increasingly looking to Flanders as a European base.

During the mission, a wide range of activities as company visits, B2B contacts and seminars are planned. All with a single aim: to create economic opportunities for Flanders and Flemish companies.

🌍 Advancing Decarbonisation Across Sibelco

Our latest Climate & Energy Report highlights the progress we are making toward a zero-carbon future. We continue to invest in cleaner technologies and energy efficiency to support our decarbonisation roadmap.

With 45 MW of installed renewable capacity across our sites, and more projects underway, we are steadily increasing the share of clean energy powering our operations.

At the same time, our circular solutions are making a real impact: every year we transform over 3 million tonnes of waste glass into high-quality cullet, helping reduce CO₂ emissions and conserve natural resources.

Together, these actions demonstrate our purpose in action: Material solutions advancing life.

🦺 Health and Safety at Work. Every Day.

Yesterday, on World Day for Safety and Health at Work, we reinforced a message that guides us year‑round: protecting people is a shared responsibility across Sibelco.

This year, our teams in Dessel, Belgium, reinforced this mindset with a strong focus on road safety, engaging employees and logistics partners in practical, hands‑on awareness activities.

The event nicely coincides with Sibelco’s 2026 Line of Fire safety campaign focused on a clear understanding of critical risks and the behaviours needed to prevent serious incidents. A good example is to stay away from blind spots of trucks and other large vehicles.

As An Leona Buttiens, VP Health & Safety, says:
“Health and safety is built through everyday choices – at work and at home. One goal. Everyone getting home safely, every day.

🚀 Solar Homerun 2026 kicks off!

Today, 28 April, Sibelco proudly launched this unique event together with the Innoptus Solar Team (KU Leuven) and key partners - LONGi Solar and VITO. Taking place on the International Day for Safety and Health at Work, the Solar Homerun highlights a powerful message: innovation, safety, and sustainability go hand in hand.

From our site in Dessel, the journey begins, marking the road to this summer’s solar race in the U.S. and showcasing the strength of collaboration between industry, research, and young talent.

At Sibelco, we’re proud to support the next generation through advanced materials expertise, including our high-purity quartz powering solar technologies.

Together with our partners, we’re driving real impact, locally and globally, while inspiring communities and putting safety first every step of the way.

🌍 Innovation, health & safety, sustainability. That’s the message we drive forward.

🌍🌿On International Earth Day, we highlight how biodiversity and responsible site management go hand in hand at Sibelco.

At Carrière des Crans in Bédoin, near Mont Ventoux in France, long‑term ecological initiatives are helping rare and protected species thrive alongside active operations.

Through projects such as restoring sandy grasslands, supporting protected species, creating amphibian habitats, and maintaining conditions for heritage wildlife, biodiversity is actively integrated into the life cycle of the site.

These initiatives are part of Sibelco’s broader ecological approach and are supported by close collaboration between our Sustainability and Commercial teams, ensuring our environmental commitments are clearly and transparently shared with our customers.

Carrière des Crans is one example of how responsible operations can contribute positively to nature.
