A new issue of the ACROSS newsletter is out!

In the eighth edition of the ACROSS Newsletter we are going to present the most notable achievements. As such, the co-design approach is presented, followed by an overview on the main outcomes of technical Work Packages (namely WP3 and WP4).

ACROSS consortium has spent large effort in the validation process, which is an essential part for assessing the real capabilities of a designed system. In this sense, Pilots are the main providers for real applications that can be used for validating the whole platform.

*Progress of GPU Acceleration in OPM Flow*

Recent work in the ACROSS project has resulted in the first measured speedup of OPM Flow when run on GPU compared to multicore CPU runs with state-of-the-art CPR solvers. The speedup came from using a BiCGSTAB linear solver developed with the CuISTL framework that was made during ACROSS, together with a new Diagonal ILU (DILU) preconditioner. The improvements are measured on large-scale CO2 storage simulations.

The main goal of the combustor pilot within the ACROSS project is to reduce the aero-engine combustor design phase by acting on both physical problem modeling and hardware optimization aspects. In other words, the aim is to improve the quality of numerical results by getting as close as possible to the reference experimental results with reduced calculation times.

ACROSS proudly participated in the 30th AGROTICA – International Trade Fair for Agricultural machinery, Equipment, and Supplies, held on 1-4 February 2024, in Thessaloniki, Greece. This four-day event marked the largest gathering of the agricultural sector in Greece and the entire Balkans Region, attracting 1804 exhibitors from 49 countries and more than 150,000 visitors. At the booth of NEUROPUBLIC, numerous visitors were informed about the project and its objectives through our informative project leaflets and interaction with our representatives. Notably, the activities associated with the Weather, Climate, Hydrological and Farming pilots, captured the keen interest of our targeted audience, sparking meaningful discussions and forging valuable connections.

👉 Help us understand the strengths and weaknesses of the proposed solution!👈

The ACROSS project aims at developing a modular, composable software stack that enables users to seamlessly run workflows over a very heterogeneous set of compute resources, which comprises HPC accelerated nodes and cloud resources.

The validation of the proposed solution goes through the implementation of heterogeneous workflows belonging to 3 main application domains: aeronautics, weather and climate predictions, energy and carbon sequestration. We are looking for additional workflows even belonging to different domains. Indeed, here is where stakeholders can try the ACROSS solutions and provide further inputs for future releases.

🎯 The main purpose of this questionnaire is to collect a view (i.e., feedback, inputs, etc.) on the developed ACROSS software stack (and platform) from the outside of the project consortium. By having a clear vision on the way stakeholders perceive the software stack (and the platform), we can better plan the way to improve the solution over the future releases, as well as how to adapt it to better cover the needs of different domains other than the three of the project.

Weather and climate forecasting is one of the three pilot projects in the ACROSS project. In it, the Max-Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), which operates a modern, competitive Earth system model, works on improving its data management workflow, especially for large ensembles of experiments as well as the storm-resolving model runs.
