🍺 American brewing scientists taking the floor at EBC Congress 2026

Join us in Rotterdam, 6–9 September 2026, for the EBC Congress, where leading brewing researchers from around the world will share the latest scientific developments shaping the future of brewing.

One of the highlights of the programme is the dedicated American session, chaired by Glen Fox, Anheuser-Busch Endowed Professor of Malting & Brewing Science at University of California, Davis and featuring presentations from renowned scientists:

Duncan Calvert from Penn State University will explore the monitoring and modelling of hop-derived phenolics and resins throughout commercial IPA production, providing valuable insights into extraction, transformation, and the impact of brewing conditions and dry-hopping parameters.

Scott Lafontaine from University of Arkansas will present a comprehensive summary of rice in the brewing process, examining its brewing performance, shelf life, sensory characteristics, and potential role in enhancing sustainability and climate resilience.

Cécile Chenot from Oregon State University / Université catholique de Louvain will discuss the dynamics of thiol release from hops and genome-wide transcription in ale and lager yeasts, offering practical insights into enhancing fruity beer aromas through yeast selection and fermentation strategies.

🌍🍺 Throwback to Bangkok: Showcasing the Value of European Beer Beyond Borders

At the end of May, Secretary General Julia Leferman joined European Commissioner Christophe Hansen's EU Agri-Food Business Mission to Thailand, bringing together European agri-food leaders, policymakers and business representatives to explore opportunities in one of Southeast Asia's most dynamic markets.

The mission highlighted Thailand's growing appetite for premium, authentic and high-quality European products, while reinforcing the importance of strong partnerships.

For Europe's brewers, these conversations matter. Beer is not just a product traded across borders, Beer is More. It is part of Europe's agricultural heritage, supports farmers and value chains across the continent, and brings people together around food, culture and shared experiences.

As we continue to champion Europe's brewing sector globally, missions like this help build the connections that create opportunities for European beer and the communities behind it.

Europe’s brewers came together in Lisbon this week to discuss the priorities shaping the future of our sector.

Our General Assembly marked an important milestone, bringing together brewing leaders from across Europe for open, interactive discussions and a shared reflection on the opportunities and challenges ahead. We were also delighted to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Cervejeiros de Portugal, our hosts for this memorable gathering.

The conversations reinforced a simple truth: :

🌱 More than a beverage, it drives innovation and sustainability throughout the value chain.

Our Opening Plenary will bring together three leading experts to explore brewing from historical, scientific and technological perspectives.

💠 Dr. Petr Vesely from AB InBev will share the story of African beer and what brewers can learn from traditional brewing practices. His talk will explore alternative raw materials, innovative brewing approaches, and insights into affordability and consumer needs.

💠 Prof. Thomas Henle from Technische Universität Dresden will present fascinating new research on Maillard reaction products in brewing fermentations. His findings offer fresh perspectives on yeast domestication and introduce the FAN glycation index as a potential new tool for assessing wort quality.

💠 Dr. Tomáš Vrzal from The Research Institute of Brewing and Malting in Prague will reveal how explainable artificial intelligence can help decode consumer preferences for non-alcoholic beers, linking sensory perception with chemical composition to better understand what drives consumer behaviour .

Together, these keynote presentations will set the stage for three days of scientific exchange, innovation and inspiration.
