Gisteren brachten we tijdens Powering the Future opnieuw experten en bedrijven samen rond een actueel thema: hoe maak je van energie-uitdagingen een concurrentieel voordeel?

In een context van volatiele energieprijzen, stijgende kosten en strengere regelgeving rond hernieuwbare energie en CO₂ werd duidelijk dat de focus vandaag verschuift van investeren naar optimaliseren. Hoe haal je maximale waarde uit zonne-energie, batterijopslag en slim energiebeheer?

Dank aan onze inspirerende sprekers voor het delen van hun inzichten en praktijkervaring. Een bijzonder dankjewel ook aan Patrizio Manganiello (EnergyVille/UHasselt) voor zijn boeiende uiteenzetting over de nieuwste ontwikkelingen in zonne-energie en de systeeminnovaties die de toekomst van industriële energie vormgeven.

🗓️ 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗡𝗖𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲!

Bringing together researchers, industry professionals, architects, engineers, policymakers and other stakeholders, this two-day event will explore the latest developments in Integrated Photovoltaics (IPV) and Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV). The summer school aims to strengthen collaboration between academia, industry and the construction sector, supporting the wider adoption of solar technologies in buildings and infrastructure across Europe.

Organised within the Horizon Europe INCREASE project and in conjunction with the EnergyVille Summer School, the programme will offer a unique interdisciplinary perspective covering topics such as:
✔️ Integrated PV and BIPV technologies and innovation
✔️ Architecture, building design and aesthetics of solar integration
✔️ Energy systems, electrification and grid integration
✔️ Energy management and storage solutions
✔️ Policy, regulation, financing and business models
✔️ Stakeholder engagement, co-creation and collaborative innovation

Our colleague Dr. Aslihan H. Babayigit has been selected as one of the three laureates of the FWO Climate Award 2026, recognizing outstanding and innovative climate research.

Together with Ilias Semmouri (Ghent University) and Harry Zekollari (Vrije Universiteit Brussel), she will receive this prestigious award and support for her research.

As part of the Solar Cookers for All (SC4All) project, Aslihan works with colleagues from Hasselt University and partner universities in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania to develop solar cookers from locally available recycled materials, helping reduce deforestation, CO₂ emissions, and health risks.

🤝EnergyVille-partners KU Leuven en VITO, Buildwise, Flanders Make en Sirris slaan de handen in elkaar in een strategisch partnerschap om een antwoord te bieden op deze vraag.

Het doel? De kloof verkleinen tussen veelbelovende ideeën en hun toepassing in renovatie- en bouwprojecten. Samen werken we aan de industrialisatie van renovatie en bouw, met een focus op:

✔️ automatisatie

✔️ robotica

✔️ digitalisering

✔️ next-generation bouwschillen

Door expertise en infrastructuur te bundelen, kunnen vernieuwende oplossingen sneller ontwikkeld, getest, gevalideerd en toegepast worden.

De Memorandum of Understanding werd vandaag ondertekend op EnergyVille, waar meer dan 40 bedrijven uit de bouw- en energiesector kennismaakten met de testinfrastructuur waarin oplossingen op ware schaal worden getest en gevalideerd.

𝗖𝗥𝗢𝗣𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗦: 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝘂𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁-𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻-𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆

Thanks to the new CROPTICS project, our UHasselt experts at EnergyVille are set to give current Agri-PV systems - that is, solar panels installed above farmland - a major upgrade. Why is this necessary? Current systems are not yet optimally tailored to agriculture. They often cast too much shade and pose a risk of heat stress or sunburn to crops.

How are they solving this? With innovative, thin film solar panels that work selectively. They allow exactly the light spectrum that plants need to grow to pass through, while the rest of the sunlight is efficiently converted into green energy. A smart dual function for limited space, in other words. The project is also investigating the concrete impact on crop quality and the surrounding ecosystem.

Bonus: it’s a highly multidisciplinary endeavor. Engineers, biologists, and social scientists are pooling their expertise. Moreover, thanks to partners like Soltech, PCFruit, the Boerenbond and sixteen advisory organizations, the project is deeply rooted in real-world industry practice.

🔍 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲

In een nieuw rapport van EnergyVille/VITO en DECHEMA e.V., wordt het eindrapport van het project 3C-VaCS (Trilateral Chemical Region - Value Chain Structures) gepubliceerd.

Het rapport analyseert de huidige toestand van de chemische industrie in de trilaterale chemische regio, bestaande uit Vlaanderen, Nederland en Noordrijn-Westfalen, en toont welke stappen de concurrentiekracht en klimaatneutraliteit kunnen verzekeren, ondanks de energiecrisis en de kostendruk.

Het eindrapport biedt een actuele en gedetailleerde analyse van de petrochemische waardeketen in de trilaterale chemische regio die, vertrekkend van de stoomkraker, een centrale basis vormt voor de chemische productie. Het schetst ook mogelijke ontwikkelingspaden tot 2050.

Enkele van de belangrijkste bevindingen:
✔️ De kosten- en energiecrises van de voorbije jaren hebben het concurrentievermogen van de Europese chemische productie aanzienlijk verzwakt.
✔️Investeringen in klimaatvriendelijke technologieën zoals CO2-afvang, elektrificatie en duurzame grondstoffen zijn technisch haalbaar, maar vereisen betrouwbare beleidskaders.
✔️De nauwe verwevenheid van locaties in Vlaanderen, Nederland en Noordrijn-Westfalen creëert synergieën en versterkt zowel de toeleveringsketens als de innovatiekracht.

In a recent Knack article, Aslihan H. Babayigit (EnergyVille/imec/UHasselt) highlights that Europe is still strong in advanced research and high-tech equipment, but that much stronger cooperation between academia, industry and policymakers is needed to turn that expertise into production capacity.
