One of the very common UXO finds on WW1 (Ypres Salient, the Somme, ...) battlefields is the shrapnel shell. It consists of a cast iron/steel projectile filled with lead shot, which is projected onto the target by means of a charge of black powder in the base of the shell, ignited by a flash from a time fuze through a flash tube. Often we find all parts of the exploded shell forced into the soil. Sometimes, when the time fuze was set incorrectly, the round ends up in the ground on ignition, leaving an archaeological soil feature with a cluster of shot and some remains of the shell.
