Many metal structures and industrial components are designed to withstand severe static and cyclic loads. Their integrity is affected by the presence and/or development of defects. Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA) serves to evaluate detected or assumed defects. There is an industry necessity for better understanding the benefit and application of these structural integrity assessments. To address this need, the Metal Structures Centre (OCAS, Belgian Welding Institute and Soete Laboratory, Ghent University) organizes a seminar at the Technologiepark 935 (Zwijnaarde) on May 19, 2016. Concrete case studies from various industry sectors will be presented and the opportunity for networking with international colleagues will encourage open and inter-disciplinary discussions.

Soete Laboratory, Tiratsoo Technical and Clarion Technical Conferences organised the first edition of the Ageing Pipelines Conference. The conference took place in Ostend, Belgium from 7 to 9 October 2015.

Having received 102 attendants from 13 different countries spanning the entire world (including Europe, North and South America, Asia and Australia), we can look back at a successful first edition. The conference was attended by pipeline operators, regulatory bodies, manufacturers, research institutes and design consultants, thus attracting a balanced audience.

This highlights the need for a better understanding of ageing infrastructures, which is becoming an increasingly hot topic especially in the world of pipelines.

Soete Laboratory welcomes two new full-time assistant professors, Dieter Fauconnier and Stijn Hertelé!

Starting on October 1, Dieter Fauconnier will initiate research in the field of numerical tribology with a focus on fluid-particle erosion and lubricated contacts. Stijn Hertelé's research activities will be directed towards analytical and numerical fracture mechanics, focussing on steel welds.

Both professors will perform teaching activities in the fields of machine design, materials selection, tribology, fracture mechanics and project-based engineering courses.
