Did you know the protein ovocledidin-17 (OC-17) acts as the "architect" of eggshell formation in chickens? 💡 By fine-tuning key nutrients in poultry diets, Science can enhance OC-17 production, leading to stronger eggshells, better hatchability, and healthier flocks! Here's how each component works:

🔬 Methionine & Lysine
These essential amino acids serve as the building blocks for OC-17 synthesis. Methionine, in particular, supports keratin production (a key shell membrane protein), while lysine ensures proper protein folding and function.

🦴 Calcium & Phosphorus (2:1 to 4:1 Ratio)
Calcium is the primary mineral in eggshells, but it needs OC-17 to properly crystallize into calcium carbonate. Phosphorus ensures optimal calcium absorption—too much or too little disrupts shell formation.

⚙️ Zinc (Zn)
This trace mineral activates enzymes that help OC-17 function efficiently. Zinc deficiency leads to poor shell quality and weakened membranes.

🛡️ Manganese (Mn)
Critical for glycosaminoglycan synthesis, which strengthens the shell’s organic matrix. Without enough Mn, shells become thin and brittle.

☀️ Vitamin D3
Enables calcium uptake in the gut and regulates OC-17 activity in the shell gland. Without D3, even high calcium diets fail to produce strong shells!

🌿 Quercetin (Plant Bioactive)
This natural antioxidant boosts OC-17 expression is supported by reducing oxidative stress in the oviduct, leading to thicker, more uniform shells.
