What does “esterified” actually mean for astaxanthin?

In this edition of our astaxanthin comparison series, we explore free and esterified astaxanthin, examining their structure, stability and digestion.

The distinction comes down to fatty acids: free astaxanthin has none attached, while esterified astaxanthin carries one or two.

For formulators, these differences matter alongside formulation choices, processing methods and storage conditions.

At axabio®, our natural astaxanthin starts with H. pluvialis microalgae, where it occurs predominantly in esterified forms.

Because understanding an ingredient goes beyond its name.

Now, let’s look at another source of astaxanthin: Phaffia rhodozyma.

This red yeast produces astaxanthin through microbial fermentation, which is a different production route from the light-driven cultivation typically used for Haematococcus pluvialis microalgae.

The differences also extend to the astaxanthin itself. Yeast produces predominantly free astaxanthin, while H. pluvialis produces mainly esterified astaxanthin, with a different molecular profile.

For human nutrition, the research behind the source also deserves attention. H. pluvialis extracts have been evaluated in multiple human clinical trials: one reason this microalgae is our source of choice at axabio®.

Take a closer look at the comparison to discover what distinguishes these two sources.

Some careers start with a plan. Others start with curiosity. 🧬

For Oleksandr Holubenko it began with a childhood fascination with biology and the human body. That curiosity led him to physiology, microbiology, a book called Microbe Hunters and eventually, into the world of microalgae.
