On April 1st, we hosted the 2026 edition of our annual event, supported by the , .worldwide, 😍💡
We had an inspiring evening filled with cutting‑edge photonics insights, thanks to our brilliant speakers 🤩.

Our three distinguished guests delivered exceptional talks:
Dr.-Ing. Laura Budde (Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V.), the SPIE VUB chapter's visiting lecturer, shared recent advancements in high‑power laser processing, including innovations in welding and wire deposition technologies.
Dr. Michał Karpiński (University of Warsaw), the Optica VUB chapter's travelling lecturer, presented fascinating developments in quantum light engineering, highlighting how temporal and spectral shaping enable next‑generation non-classical light sources
Prof. Dr. Ir. Heidi Ottevaere (B-PHOT, VUB) offered valuable guidance on how to navigate the Master's thesis journey with confidence and clarity

It was a wonderful opportunity to learn, connect, and get inspired by leading researchers in the field. Our speakers also had the chance to visit the labs and enjoy Brussels 📸.
A huge thank you to the team and all volunteers who made this edition a success.
Stay tuned for more exciting events from your beloved Chapter 😍💡

We kicked off the student event of the IEEE Photonics Benelux Symposium with a visit to the Museum of Illusions in Brussels, a perfect way to start the day! 🔍✨

From optical tricks to perspective-bending rooms, the visit blended science and fun in the best possible way. It also gave students a great chance to meet, connect, and ease into the symposium with something a bit different from the usual academic setting.

Thanks to everyone who joined us, a great start to an exciting symposium!

Last Friday’s information session was a real success! 🚀
Thank you to everyone who joined us to learn more about the B-PHOT Student Chapter and our collaboration with OPTICA and SPIE. It was great to see so much interest in the opportunities these societies offer, from conferences and scholarships to international networking.

The discussions afterward were engaging, and the pizza definitely helped keep the conversations going. 🍕
We’re looking forward to welcoming even more of you at our future events!

Congratulations to our two winners of the B-PHOT Student Chapter PhotoContest 2025 🤩📸

For the general submission category, Kurt Rochlitz amazed us with its wonderful picture titled : Path of Photons.

"In the quiet of dusk, a trail of light carves its way through the landscape a reminder that even in darkness, light always finds a path. This photo captures the magic of a fleeting moment where nature and technology meet. The purple glow seems almost alive, inviting us to follow toward the tree, into the unknown, and into the very essence of light’s beauty. This image was created using a long exposure technique to capture the motion of light over time a process known as light painting. Two different light sources were used to achieve the final effect. A purple wand light was moved along the path to produce the dynamic, flowing trail that defines the "Path of Photons." To enhance the natural elements, a white light was briefly used to illuminate the yellow buttercups lining the path and to softly highlight the tree in the background, giving the scene both contrast and depth."

Then, for the quantum submission category, Sasa Topic presented a beautiful and intruging perspective of a littrow mode hop free mount of ECDL solid state tunable laser.

“On the left is a diffraction grating , feedback mirror is on the right and straight ahead is a collimator with lased diode right behind it. The workhorse of all and any quantum optics labs.”

Thank you to all participants, you really did an amazing job this year 😍
