Steel structures operating in 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱, 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 are continuously exposed to severe corrosion.

Whether it concerns buried pipelines, quay walls, bridges, sheet piles, offshore platforms, water treatment plants or other industrial installations, corrosion remains one of the leading causes of 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 and 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲.

Today, protecting these assets requires far more than applying a coating. Asset owners increasingly combine 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀, 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀 and 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 to improve reliability, optimise maintenance strategies and extend the service life of critical infrastructure.

Beschermende coatings op stalen bruggen en spoorwegconstructies worden traditioneel beoordeeld via zoutneveltesten, visuele inspecties en aanhechtingsproeven. Deze methoden geven echter vooral informatie nadat de degradatie al is begonnen.

In dit artikel stellen Noah Nzuamo-Kiabanguka van Infrabel en Lode Schoofs van KU Leuven hun onderzoek voor naar de mogelijkheden van elektrochemische impedantiespectroscopie (EIS) voor een meer voorspellende opvolging van corrosiebescherming.

De studie toont aan dat vooral de relatieve evolutie van de effectieve coatingcapaciteit een veelbelovende vroege indicator is voor wateropname en coatingdegradatie.
