Happy World Maritime Day 2023!

As we celebrate the maritime industry and all who work in it, particularly our seafarers, the theme for this year is MARPOL at 50 — Our commitment goes on, which reflects IMO’s long history of protecting the environment from the impact of shipping and its continuing commitment to this crucial work.

Through its work as a division of the International Foundation for Aids to Navigation (IFAN), MENAS owns and maintains an extensive network of Aids to Navigation (AtoN) in what is one of the busiest trade lanes in the world with a delicate ecosystem to protect. These AtoN complement MARPOL’s efforts towards safety and the prevention of pollution, as they indicate the safest way for vessels to navigate, thus preventing incidents which might cause pollution.

“Although Aids to Navigation do not strictly sit under MARPOL, they play a vital role in protecting the marine environment particularly in areas where there is heavy traffic and a high risk of damages,” said Peter Stanley, CEO of MENAS’s parent organisation, IFAN. “On World Maritime Day, we congratulate the IMO on 50 years of MARPOL and, with the rest of the maritime industry, will carry on the work of protecting our ocean.”

Under the terms, they will establish a framework for exploring collaboration opportunities to ensure the waterways in Abu Dhabi are safe, clean and free from debris and obstructions, in accordance with local and international safety regulations.

MENAS General Manager, Mahdi Al Mosawi, addressed delegates at the 20th IALA Conference explaining human presence is key in navigation despite digitalisation. He said: "Digitalisation is transforming the maritime sector, bringing unparalleled benefits in terms of navigation accuracy and operational efficiency and low cost. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that electronic systems are not infallible. In the event of an electronic failure or malfunction, human intervention and expertise is essential to ensure the safety of vessels, crew, and cargo.”
