Kindly, stop relying solely on the 1950s Horizontal Modulus of Subgrade Reaction (Winkler) Method for the design of laterally loaded piles.
Modern geotechnical practice increasingly favors the P–Y Curve Method, which better represents the nonlinear soil–pile interaction, soil yielding, and depth-dependent soil behavior.
While the modulus of subgrade reaction approach may still be useful for preliminary assessments, the P–Y method provides a more realistic prediction of pile deflections, bending moments, and soil resistance under lateral loading.
For critical projects, use P–Y curves—not a constant subgrade modulus.
