The evolution of the almighty Caterpillar 988 loader ⬇️

In 1963, the first production model of the Caterpillar 988 marked a turning point for heavy loaders.

The machine was powered by a six cylinder Caterpillar D343 diesel rated at 300 flywheel horsepower.

By 1968, output had climbed to 325 horsepower as the design evolved.

Bucket capacity started at 5 cubic yards.
It later increased to 6 cubic yards as Caterpillar refined the machine.

The 988 quickly became one of the company’s most important loader platforms.

- THE 988 TODAY -

The modern Caterpillar 988 represents how far the legendary loader series has evolved since the 1960s.

Today’s machine is powered by a Caterpillar C18, producing about 580 horsepower.

Operating weight now reaches roughly 51 tonnes, or about 112,500 pounds, placing it firmly in the large quarry and mining loader class.

Bucket capacity varies widely depending on the job.
Typical buckets range from 6.2 to 17 cubic yards, allowing the machine to handle everything from aggregates to large quarry loads.

Rated payload reaches about 12.5 tonnes at the quarry face and up to 16 tonnes in loose material handling.

The 988 is commonly matched with 770 to 775 class haul trucks, making it a key loading machine in quarries and large earthmoving operations.

More than sixty years after the first model appeared, the 988 remains one of Caterpillar’s core production loaders.

From a 300 horsepower machine with a five yard bucket in 1963, the modern 988 has grown into a highly specialized loader built for continuous high production work.
