The reconstruction of the 100-kilometre Nata-Gweta Road is gathering momentum, with project engineers saying significant progress across key components of the development is expected to enhance connectivity, support local communities, also stimulating regional trade.
According to Project Engineer Tumelo J. Mbaiwa, the project is advancing steadily despite initial challenges, with construction remaining largely on schedule. “The project consists of five major components, namely the main Nata-Gweta road works, access roads in Tsokotshaa, Dzoroga and Gweta villages, the Gweta stormwater drainage system, a bypass road that will support traffic flow during construction, and the development of staff houses and offices in Gweta,” said Mbaiwa.
He said the construction of the bypass road has reached 75 percent completion and is expected to be finalized in July. Mbaiwa further noted that once it is complete, the bypass will facilitate the next phase of works on the main carriageway and help ensure minimal disruption to road users during the construction period.
Progress on the main road has also been encouraging. Bush clearing has been completed over 35 kilometres of the 100-kilometre stretch, while topsoil removal has reached 33 kilometres. Roadbed construction is underway, with 17 kilometres already completed.
“Although we experienced challenges related to waterlogged borrow pits, we have successfully addressed those issues and the project remains on track,” Mbaiwa said, expressing confidence that the project team is meeting key milestones despite operational challenges encountered earlier in the construction phase.
Led by HSNV Group, a 100 percent citizen-owned and citizen-run company, the Nata-Gweta Road Project is one of the Development Manager (DM) projects permitted to continue during the ongoing review of the DM model.
Upon completion, the project is expected to improve access to essential services, strengthen economic activity, support surrounding communities, and boost cross-border trade, further contributing to Botswana’s infrastructure development agenda.
