BERA INTENSIFIES ENFORCEMENT AGAINST ILLICIT FUEL TRADE

In a continued crackdown on illegal petroleum activities, the Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA) has confiscated a consignment of illicit petrol in Kazungula.

This operation forms part of BERA's ongoing nationwide enforcement drive targeting unlicensed and unregulated fuel trading, activities that cost the country significant revenue and undermine the integrity of the local fuel supply chain.

BERA remains committed to protecting consumers, ensuring fair market practices, and safeguarding national revenue by clamping down on illicit petroleum trade wherever it occurs.

We urge members of the public to report suspicious fuel trading activities and to purchase petroleum products only from licensed and authorized outlets

The Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA) and the Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) this morning signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening cooperation in the fight against illicit fuel trade and revenue leakages in the petroleum sector.

Through the MoU, the two institutions will systematically coordinate enforcement, conduct joint risk management and strengthen intelligence-led monitoring across the petroleum supply chain, including at Botswana entry points. The partnership is expected to shift enforcement from ad hoc interventions to a more coordinated system that combines the agencies expertise, technology and regulatory mandates.
