BITRI AND WHO STRENGTHEN PARTNERSHIP UNDER PANDEMIC FUND PROJECT
The Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation recently welcomed a delegation from the World Health Organization at its Maranyane House head office this week to advance implementation of the WHO Pandemic Fund Project: Strengthening One Health Disease Surveillance and Response in Southern Africa – Botswana Component.

The engagement focused on establishing an integrated Information Management System designed to enhance early warning, surveillance, and coordinated response to climate driven disease outbreaks. The system will consolidate human health, animal health, environmental, meteorological, and hydrological data into a centralized and interoperable platform capable of generating real time dashboards, automated alerts, predictive analytics, and cross border data sharing within the Southern African Development Community region.

The initiative targets priority diseases including cholera, malaria, rabies, anthrax, and COVID 19, while incorporating climate indicators such as rainfall, temperature, and flooding patterns. It aligns with the One Health framework and strengthens Botswana’s pandemic preparedness obligations under the International Health Regulations 2005.

BITRI has been appointed Technical Implementation and Delivery Partner for the Botswana component of the project. The Institute will lead requirements elicitation, prototype development, and system architecture design, while overseeing quality assurance, governance, and technical coordination. Drawing on its experience in national health platforms such as the Electronic Medical Records System (EMRS) and the Master Facility List (MFL), BITRI will develop a secure and scalable system that integrates existing platforms including DHIS2 (a platform that allows for the collection, reporting, analysis and distribution of aggregate and individual-level data), the (Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) [a WHO Africa strategy that unifies surveillance, laboratory, and response systems to track priority diseases and strengthen evidence based public health action nationwide], the National Malaria Elimination Programme systems, and meteorological data infrastructure.
Through phased deployment, stakeholder engagement, and continuous monitoring, the partnership aims to strengthen multisectoral collaboration, enhance data driven decision making, and reinforce national and regional early warning mechanisms in the face of climate sensitive disease threats.

The project is implemented under the BITRI Information and Systems Technologies division led by Professor Thato Tsalaile.

BITRI HOSTS SEQUENCING AND BIOINFORMATICS TRAINING TO STRENGTHEN BOTSWANA’S GENOMIC SURVEILLANCE CAPACITY
BITRI is hosting a Sequencing and Bioinformatics training workshop aimed at strengthening Botswana’s capacity in pathogen genomics and genomic surveillance for Ministry of Health laboratory services. Participants in the training principally comprise of the Ministry of Health’s public health laboratory personnel from various facilities across the country. The training programme encompasses bioinformatics training with hands-on sequencing workflows to equip participants with practical skills for infectious disease research and outbreak response.

Participants are also introduced to high-performance computing (HPC) environments for large-scale genomic data processing and to workflow management systems such as Nextflow, which enable the development of reproducible, scalable, and automated bioinformatics pipelines. These skills allow medical scientists to efficiently manage and analyze large sequencing datasets while ensuring standardization and reproducibility of analyses. Overall, the training supports the integration of Next Generation Sequencing into routine diagnostics while strengthening Botswana’s preparedness to monitor and respond to pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases affecting the country.
