*WHAT IS THERMOSTAT?*
Small valve inside water pipe, top of engine near radiator hose. Costs P120 only.
*✅ ADVANTAGES OF THERMOSTAT (Why you MUST have it):*
*1. Engine warms up fast (5 mins vs 30 mins)*
- Without thermostat, engine runs cold in morning
- Cold engine = diesel not burning well = white smoke you see in your MF 385 photo?
- Thermostat closes, engine heats to 80°C quickly
*2. Saves fuel - P500 per week*
- Cold engine drinks 20% more diesel
- Hot engine (80-85°C) uses less diesel
- On MF 385 doing 6L/hr, you waste 1.2L/hr = P16/hr loss
*3. Less engine wear - Engine lives 10 years vs 3 years*
- Cold oil is thick, doesn't reach bearings
- Piston rings wear fast when cold
- With thermostat, oil becomes thin quickly, protects engine
- Without it, you do engine overhaul after 3 years - P25,000!
*4. More power*
- MF 385 gives full 85HP only at 80°C
- At 40°C (no thermostat), gives only 65HP - weak in field
*5. Heater & hydraulic work better*
- On cold morning in June/July (2°C in Serowe), tractor with thermostat can start and work immediately
*❌ What happens WITHOUT thermostat (your MF 385 on blocks might have this):*
- Engine never reaches temperature
- Water pump runs all time, over-cools
- Cylinder liner gets washed by diesel - called "bore wash"
- White smoke, low power, high fuel
- In 1 year, engine is dead
Many farmers remove thermostat: "Botswana is hot, no need"
WRONG! Big mistake costing you P25,000!
✅ WITH THERMOSTAT (P120 part):
✓ Engine hot in 5 mins - full power 85HP
✓ Saves 20% diesel = P500/week saved
✓ Engine lasts 10 years
✓ Less smoke, more power
✓ Oil protects bearings quickly
❌ WITHOUT THERMOSTAT:
✗ Engine always cold - white smoke
✗ Drinks more diesel
✗ Engine wears fast - overhaul P25k
