Flood waters rise rapidly. If you live in a flood-prone area, have a plan in place and take the necessary precautions to keep safe.

If you expect flooding or see water levels rising, unplug all appliances and turn off your main breaker.

Please do not walk into any area or water that may be connected to an electrical source. Always keep away from fallen power lines and assume all wires on the ground are electrically charged.

Storms bring heavy rains, strong winds and lightning strikes which can damage power line equipment and cause outages.

When an incident occurs and you have a temporary outage, it's a sign that one of our protection devices has been activated. The power is interrupted as the device assesses the nature of the fault. This assessment will decide whether, for example, a tree branch made contact but has already fallen off without damage; or something more serious which requires a team to be dispatched.

UNPLUG chargers and throw away broken cords. One of the most common electrical hazards in homes is damaged power cords. These can easily get caught on furniture or walked over, which can lead to an electrical shock or even a fire.

Even though a charger only puts out 5 volts at 5 watts/1 amp (an iPad charger puts out 12 watts/2.1 amps) it is more than enough power to cause overheating and the beginning of a fire. A frayed cable could also burn the battery by causing a short circuit, which again could cause a fire.

Table lamps are a great way to provide just enough light while saving you energy in various rooms. It's important to take a some things into consideration when choosing the right surge protector.

What Are You Protecting?
The value of the equipment you want to protect is the most important consideration when choosing a surge protector. Devices that are critical to work/home life and those that are otherwise costly or fragile require a greater degree of protection. A higher joule rating is the best indicator of greater protection.

Choose a surge protector with a joule rating at the very least in the 200 to 400 range. Sensitive or costly equipment, such as computers, displays and audio/video equipment, warrants a joule rating of at least 1000. A joule rating over 2000 indicates maximum protection.

How Many Outlets Do You Need?
Count the devices you want to protect and get a model to meet your needs.

If any of the devices have right-angle plugs or transformers, be sure to select a model with adequate spacing between outlets to accommodate them.

Consider whether you will charge USB devices from your surge protector and identify models with USB-A charging ports so you can avoid using adapters.
