It's been a busy few months behind the scenes.

A lot of people see construction as what happens on site, but some of the most important work happens long before the first machine arrives. Design work, planning, approvals, consultant coordination, budgeting, financing, builder relationships, and countless conversations all happen before a project becomes visible.

At Highland Advantage Builders, we've been spending a lot of time working through those stages on several projects while continuing to support our existing clients with design, construction, renovations, consulting, and warranty work.

We're proud of the work we've been doing and excited about where things are headed. There are a few projects beginning to gain momentum that we're looking forward to sharing as they move from planning into construction.

For now, we're staying focused on what we've always believed: clear communication, practical solutions, and building things the right way.

Thanks to everyone who continues to trust us with their projects and refer us to friends, family, and colleagues. We appreciate it more than you know.

“Jack of all trades, master of none.”

At first glance, some people may look at Highland Advantage Builders and think exactly that.

We work in home design, custom homes, renovations, civil infrastructure, subdivision development, commercial millwork, and consulting.

That can seem like too much.

The reality is that our experience developed over years of working through nearly every stage of the construction and development process.

Since 2015, James and Matt have played central roles in planning, budgeting, coordinating, designing, and delivering multiple subdivisions, homes, and infrastructure projects throughout British Columbia.

That includes:

• 11 homes built in Sechelt
• More than 15 home designs
• 4 completed subdivisions
• Industrial millwork for the LNG Canada workforce camp
• Civil infrastructure including water, sewer, storm, hydro, and roads

We are not trying to do everything.

We are builders first.

The broader experience helps us see the full picture, identify issues earlier, and make better decisions before construction begins.

Sometimes the rest of the phrase is the most important part:

“Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than master of one.”

Jack of All Trades, Master of None? It is a phrase often used as criticism. If someone looks at Highland Advantage Builders from the outside, they may think the same thing. We provide home design, custom home construction, renovations, commercial and industrial millwork installation, civil

Most people don’t get stuck during construction.
They get stuck before it even starts.

Permits. Zoning. Costs that don’t make sense. Timelines that keep shifting.

By the time they call a builder, they’re already frustrated.

So I’m curious—what part of building or developing feels the most unclear to you right now?

Not a sales post. Just want to hear where people are getting hung up.

If you don’t want to post it publicly, send me a message.
I’ll give you a straight answer or point you in the right direction.

Working with your hands to create something is a different kind of satisfaction.

No rush on this one—just placing each piece until it sits right.
You don’t force it, you work with it.

First impression—what do you notice?

Kept this one simple and let the layout do the work.

Curious what people think on this one.

There’s a big difference between something that looks finished and something that actually feels right when you’re in it.

A lot of that comes down to proportions, light, and how spaces connect—not just finishes.

This place was a good example of that. Nothing over the top, just put together properly.

Curious what people notice first when they walk into a place—layout or finishes?

Most builders stay in one area.
Ours didn’t start that way.

We spent several years delivering projects on the Sunshine Coast, working within a broader project structure and gaining hands-on experience across a range of builds, sites, and municipalities.

That time shaped how we approach construction.

It made one thing clear:
the success of a project depends just as much on how it’s run as how it’s built.

Clear scope.
Aligned decisions.
Direct accountability.

Those aren’t optional—they’re required.

That’s why Highland operates the way it does today.

We work independently, take on a limited number of projects, and stay closely involved from planning through completion.

We continue to work across the Coast, the Lower Mainland, and into Alberta—but only where we know we can execute to that standard.

How Highland Started

Working separately wasn’t working.

Matt and I had already spent a year on the same site, finishing a 23-unit townhouse project.

When that wrapped up, there wasn’t another job lined up like that. We both went back to running as sole proprietors for a bit.

It got complicated fast.

Two businesses trying to operate on the same projects, splitting everything, keeping things aligned—it added friction where there didn’t need to be any.

So we stopped doing it that way.

We set up Highland and kept moving.

Same working relationship, just structured properly so things run the way they should.

That’s still how we operate now.

We’ve worked on large, multi-unit builds. We’ve handled the coordination that comes with that. Now we bring that same approach into every job we take on.

If you’ve got a project coming up, reach out.
