A very special event will be held at the Innovation Lab (Academy Community Hub) this coming Sunday, 28 May starting at 7pm. We are co-hosting "A Virtual Evening With Astronomer David Balam, Discovery of Planet Annapolis Royal". He will join via live video link to discuss Astronomy and the process of discovery. This is not to be missed !

I'm excited to be co-hosting this very special event with Gary Walsh of the Western Nova Scotia Starlight Committee and Jeff Hafting of the Annapolis Innovation Lab.

In 2018, our town was honoured by Canadian astronomer David D. Balam, with the naming of a planet he'd discovered for ‘Annapolis Royal' - in recognition of the town's prominent role in the early origins of our nation; and its ongoing leadership in heritage stewardship and preservation.

News of the recognition was reported locally by Lawrence Powell: https://www.saltwire.com/nova-scotia/news/canadian-astronomer-names-small-planet-after-annapolis-royal-245720/
However, it seems many remain unaware of this wonderful tribute to our community.

So, we've invited David to join us virtually to talk about his discovery of 'Planet Annapolis Royal'. As well as his many other discoveries - and his fascinating work tracking Near Earth Objects (NEO's) that might pose a threat to our planet. It's a free community event on Sunday May 28th (7:00 PM) at the Academy Community Hub. If you're a stargazer, you won't want to miss it.

It was launched in Los Angeles a few days ago, made its way across the continent, and landed 150Km from the Annapolis Royal Space Agency. Of course we will go and get it for you! The Annapolis Valley Amateur Radio Club got the call via their network of ham radio operators, and we helped retrieve this package from the shores of Burnaby Lake this morning. It is still in perfect condition, and we will re-launch this back into the sky soon for it to continue its way around the globe.
