resh stone, clean passes, better roads.

Belly dumping is one of those behind-the-scenes jobs that makes a big difference on rural and public roads.

By laying stone evenly along the road, the crew can build up the surface, improve drainage, reduce soft spots, and give graders the material they need to shape a smoother, stronger road.

It is practical work, but it is important work — especially during spring road maintenance season. Tackaberry’s May content focus includes public road grading, belly dumping, and cottage road grading, making this image a strong fit for the current seasonal campaign.

What you don’t see beneath the road matters just as much as what you drive on.

A culvert is designed to move water safely under a road, but the pipe is only part of the job. The material packed around it is what helps support the road above and protects the culvert for years to come.

In this photo, our crew is carefully compacting the stone around a newly installed culvert. Proper compaction reduces settlement, helps prevent washouts, and ensures the road can handle traffic through changing seasons.

It's the kind of work most people never notice—but it's essential to building infrastructure that lasts.

Every layer matters. Every detail counts.

Have you ever noticed a culvert under a road or driveway and wondered what it actually does?

Most people notice potholes.

Few notice drainage.

When it comes to gravel roads, drainage is everything.

A properly graded road isn't just about creating a smoother ride. It's designed to move water off the driving surface before it has a chance to cause damage.

When water sits on a road, it can lead to:
• Potholes
• Washboarding
• Soft spots
• Faster road deterioration

That's why spring grading is one of the most important maintenance activities of the year. A well-shaped road helps water flow where it's supposed to go, protecting the road surface and extending its lifespan.

It's not always the work you notice right away that makes the biggest difference.

What's the biggest challenge on roads in your area: potholes, dust, washboarding, or drainage?

Why do gravel roads always seem worse in the spring?

Winter is tough on roads.

Freeze-thaw cycles push moisture into the surface. Snowplows, traffic, and melting ice create ruts, washboarding, potholes, and uneven surfaces.

That's why spring grading is so important.

A properly graded road:
✔ Improves drainage
✔ Reduces potholes and washboarding
✔ Creates a smoother ride
✔ Helps the road last longer before major repairs are needed

It's one of the most effective ways municipalities can protect their road investment after a long Ontario winter.

At Tackaberry, spring road maintenance season means getting roads back into shape for the months ahead.

What's the roughest road you've driven on this spring?

Ever wonder how raw rock becomes the roads, driveways, and job sites we use every day?

It starts right here.

Before stone gets delivered, spread, graded, or paved over, it has to be crushed, screened, and sorted into the right material for the job. This is the behind-the-scenes work that keeps projects moving across Eastern Ontario.

From quarry to customer, every load has a purpose.

What do you want to see next: the crushing process, the screening process, or how the finished stone gets used on site?

There’s something satisfying about seeing a rough road come back into shape.

This grader is doing the important work beneath the surface — cutting, leveling, and spreading crushed stone so the road is ready for traffic, compaction, and the season ahead.

It’s steady work. Local work. The kind of work that keeps rural roads moving.

Keeping rural roads clear, safe, and moving.

A lot of the work that keeps a road usable happens before most people notice it. Clearing brush, improving visibility, and keeping access open all matter — especially on the backroads and job sites that connect our communities.

Simple work. Important work. Done right.

What road maintenance job do you appreciate most once it’s finished?

05/26/2026

A full truck. A good operator. A long trail of dust behind it.

That’s a busy quarry doing what it does best.

What do you think this load is headed for — road base, driveway stone, or a construction site?
