As our global population ages, frailty research is becoming increasingly important. The loss of mobility and independence often seen in older adults can be closely tied to skeletal muscle dysfunction.

A new study by Laskin et al. explored how different frailty indices affect skeletal muscle resistance and resilience to physical stress in aged female mice.

"Increasing indices of frailty in aged female mice are associated with impaired skeletal muscle resilience to downhill running stress"
https://doi.org/10.1007/s11357-025-01856-7

Mice were classified by frailty score and subjected to repeated downhill running to induce eccentric contraction stress. Researchers then assessed contractile strength of the EDL and soleus using Aurora Scientific’s 1200A system, alongside RNA sequencing to examine mitochondrial gene regulation.

Key findings showed that higher frailty scores were linked to:
ā¬‡ļø Reduced muscle performance
ā¬‡ļø Slower recovery
ā¬†ļø Increased exercise-induced injury

These insights highlight the critical need to account for frailty when investigating age-related declines in muscle function.

Today marks Canadian National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🧔

This day acknowledges the painful history of Canada’s residential schools and honours survivors like Phyllis (Jack) Webstad, whose story inspired Orange Shirt Day. Wearing orange is both a reminder and commitment to listening, learning, and supporting reconciliation. Each year, the Aurora Scientific team wears orange shirts to affirm that Every Child Matters. Together, we commit to building a better, more just future.

šŸ’”Are you ready for this week's ? šŸ’”

QUESTION
Aurora Scientific’s 1700A Myofibril System, invented by Dr. Dilson Rassier and Dr. Aleksander Labuda is the first commercially available system of its kind. Can you guess its nickname?

Think you know the answer - check the comment section. Need help – check the hints below.

HINT 1
The ā€œbeakā€ like shape of the Myofibril Test System can be seen at the intersection of where the myofibril is held between an atomic force microscopy (AFM) transducer, a highly sensitive force transducer, and glass needle, which is connected to the 340A Piezo Length Controller.

HINT 2
In a funny coincidence, it shares the same nickname as a criminal mastermind in the Batman comic books published by DC Comics!

September 7th is World Duchenne Awareness Day, a global movement to raise awareness and drive progress for those living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).

This year’s theme, ā€œFamily: the heart of careā€, is a powerful reminder that behind every scientific breakthrough, clinical milestone, or act of advocacy are the families who provide unwavering strength, love and support.

New Advancement Unveiled!

Last year at BioRob 2024, Sperduti et al. introduced a novel mechatronic testbed utilizing the Aurora Scientific 300C-I mechanical stimulator to precisely and repeatedly determine mechanical innocuous and pain thresholds.

Mechanical Stimulator
https://aurorascientific.com/products/neuroscience/300e-i-dual-mode-indenters/

Fast forward to this year, their recent paper in Scientific Reports presents an enhanced version of this technology—a groundbreaking testbed that integrates both mechanical and thermal stimulation in a single platform with high spatial resolution, enabling continuous or discrete stimulation over a consistent, small contact area, all within a single experimental session.

Why is this important?
------------
* Seamless integration
No more switching devices—mechanical and thermal stimuli are delivered from the same system, streamlining workflow

* Enhanced precision and repeatability
High-resolution and automated positioning ensures consistent delivery of force and temperature

* Focused thermal targeting
A small thermal tip allows investigation of localized sensory responses, which was previously challenging

* Improved experimental efficiency
Faster pain recognition tasks and better-controlled stimuli improve accuracy and reduce variability

šŸš€ Join the upcoming webinar with Dr. Anne McArdle and Dr. Malcolm Jackson on September 9th as they explore groundbreaking research from the Muscle Laboratories at the University of Liverpool. They'll examine how redox regulation influences the adaptive responses of skeletal muscle during physical activity and how these processes evolve with age.

This webinar covers the development of cutting-edge methodologies to study reactive oxygen species (ROS) in muscle cells and uncover their specific functions. They also discuss how age-related disruptions in redox balance can affect muscle responses, particularly in the production of heat shock proteins (HSPs). The webinar presents findings demonstrating that restoring HSP levels in older mice can enhance muscle mass and function. Additionally, they draw parallels between muscle responses in ageing and the rapid muscle loss observed during space flight. This is studied using 3D human muscle constructs on the International Space Station (ISS). Research indicates that microgravity impacts muscle contractions, and they show how HSP overexpression offers partial protection, mirroring the ageing process on Earth.

This session is ideal for anyone interested in the intersection of muscle biology, the ageing process, and space research! šŸ’«
