The company formed several completely new divisions including a large press repair facility, a CNC machine shop, an automation house, a coil handling technology department, and a design department. Two sister companies, Western Mechanical and Western Hydraulics, were also established. Because of their desire to better service their customers, Barrie Welding has become one of the largest "one stop jobbing shops" in Ontario. From it's humble beginnings, the company has grown to over 200,000 square feet and currently employs 200 skilled people. What is a Francis Turbine?
A Francis turbine is a type of hydraulic reaction turbine used to convert the energy of flowing or falling water into rotational mechanical energy, which then drives a generator to produce electricity.
It is the most commonly used water turbine in hydropower plants worldwide.
Key Design Features:
• Water enters the turbine radially (from the sides)
• Water exits axially (straight out)
• Has adjustable guide vanes (wicket gates) to control water flow and power output
• Operates efficiently under medium water head (height) conditions

How It Works
1. Water is directed from the dam through a penstock (pressure pipe) to the turbine.
2. Guide vanes adjust to control water flow.
3. Water flows into the runner—a wheel with curved blades.
4. As water passes through, it causes the runner to spin.
5. The rotating shaft connects to a generator, producing electricity.
Where Francis Turbines Are Used
They are primarily used in:
Hydroelectric Power Stations Main power generation source Dams and Reservoir Systems Grid electrical supply & water management Industrial Hydropower Facilities.
