The is warning residents about a scam targeting homeowners involving unsolicited attic inspections and home repair services in the Acadian Peninsula region.
Police have received several reports of individuals going door-to-door stating they are with an insulation/refrigeration company from Quebec offering free attic inspections, while claiming to be associated with a NB Power program. Once inside the home, the individuals allegedly present homeowners with photos of supposed mold, faulty insulation, or other damage in their attic.
Homeowners are then pressured into agreeing to costly repairs and signing contracts on the spot, with requested payments reportedly ranging from $3,000 to $8,000.
Residents are reminded to take the following precautions to protect themselves from fraud:
• Never allow unsolicited contractors into your home
• Do not feel pressured to make immediate decisions or payments
• Always ask for identification and verify credentials directly with the company
• Obtain multiple quotes before agreeing to repairs
• Report suspicious activity to police immediately
