Featured Knifemaker – Mike Pisio.

Mike lives with his wife, Evelyn, in Kamloops, BC. He started making knives in 1996 when he was in Vanderhoof, BC, working as an RCMP officer, He met longtime Knifemaker Bob Lay, who was a Conservation officer. He asked Bob if he would show him how to make a knife. Bob gave him some 440C steel, instructions, and said, “Let me know if you need more information”.

Mike went to work with files and sandpaper, making his first knife (see first photo). Over the past 30 years, there has been a lot of trial and error and many conversations with Bob. The big change came when he acquired a used 2” x 72” grinder and kiln. Mike has carefully maintained them and continues to use them today.

All of Mike’s knives have a mirror finish. He says, “I mirror finish my blades before I heat treat them. After they are heat-treated, I soak them for a day or so in extra-strength vinegar to soften the scale. I dry them and start buffing, taking them to a 400 grit and the mirror finish.”

He is now retired, and knifemaking is a hobby that he enjoys doing for several hours each morning. When asked what he likes most, he said: “Taking a piece of steel and wood and making a functional knife that will be handed down in a family.”

Mike uses only 440C for his blades and a variety of handle materials, including stabilized wood, brass bolsters, spacers and elk antler. He makes mostly hunting knives, selling about 30 - 50 per year, mainly at BC trade shows.

Mike’s Tip #1 – “Take a blade to a mirror finish before heat treating, then soak it in extra-strength vinegar for a day or so to soften the scale. When buffing, use your bare hands so that you can feel the heat of the blade. It should not get overheated, as that will damage the blade. Bob taught me this technique.”

Mike’s Tip #2 - “You don’t need a lot of equipment or space. I have a 2x72 grinder, kiln, buffing machines, files, and a corner of the garage. Take care of your equipment, it will last for a long time.”

FEATURED KNIFEMAKER - Matt Sicard. He lives in Matheson, Ontario.

After several years of working in gold mining, Matt launched into full-time knifemaking, turning his longtime hobby into his livelihood.

His fascination with knives/swords started in the early 2000’s when Japanese swords were featured in cartoons such as Samurai Jack. Matt was only 7-8, but he wanted to learn more. He found a History Channel sword-making video series, Walter Sorrells’ YouTube channel, and saw a blacksmith forge in an antique village.

At 9 years old, Matt used the garage stove, an anvil, a 4 lb. hammer, and an 8” bench stone and made his first knife. It took a couple of years to finish, by that time his love of blacksmithing was fully ingrained.

By 2021, Matt had worked 3 years in the mining industry, and after sustaining cumulative injury, he was left out of a job with limited finances. Luckily, he’d recently purchased a forging press, steel, and a large quantity of belts and decided to try monetizing his hobby.

He started by following the American Bladesmith Society standards that a blade should shave arm hair and have 90-degree flexibility. But when he placed his knives on the KKF (Kitchen Knife Forum), and one knife was “passed around” to 24-30 knifemakers, he got feedback on design, sharpness, and look and feel. He combined his input with information from the KKF and customer feedback, learning an enormous amount in 6 months.

Matt can make EDC, machetes, filets, and swords, but he has specialized in Japanese-style kitchen knives. He says, “The thinner the edge, the better they are for precise food cutting and the grind can have a long-term impact on the blade’s performance.” His kitchen knives typically have an edge thickness of less than 2/10 mm (0.008”) or < 1mm (0.040”) above the edge.

Most of Matt’s customers are from the US. Surprisingly, he says he’s sent more knives to Australia than he’s sold in Canada.

He has produced nearly 600 knives in the four years of his professional career.

FUN FACT - “The Family Knife Cleaner” or “Mechanical Knife Cleaner” was manufactured by Fellows and Bates of Manchester, England, in the 1890s.

This wooden and cast-iron cleaner was used to clean knives and utensils before stainless steel was introduced.

An open fire or range was a constant source of soot, smoke, and dust, causing constant tarnishing. Therefore, cooking utensils needed to be cleaned daily.

The device consists of a round wooden box mounted on a cast-iron stand with two wooden-mounted round leather sections that face each other inside. It was turned in a circular motion by the handle, mounted with a bearing at the side of the stand. Holes in the feet enabled it to be screwed to a table.

Knives and other utensils were placed in openings to the required depth. Cleaning powder was inserted, and as the handle was turned, the blades and handles were polished.

It became obsolete when stainless steel took over!

Diameter – 14” Base 17”x 6.7” Width x 4”
