Deep, Narrow Groove Welding is one of the most difficult types of welding to video. Sufficient light needs to be added to illuminate the melt pool and its surrounding area without the image saturating from the weld arc.

The Xiris XVC-750 Near Infrared Imaging weld camera does a very nice job of videoing narrow groove welding as seen in the attached video.

When paired with a suitable illumination device, careful optics and field-of-view selection, the key features of the weld can be clearly seen by the operator so that they can control the process.

The blue line in the image is Seam Monitor detecting the seam position through the full weld pass. That position goes to an operator dashboard or into closed-loop correction of the torch.

The hard part is keeping the seam visible once the arc strikes. Setup lighting gets overwhelmed by arc intensity, and the contrast disappears. On a MIG seamer, that means drift, rework, scrap, and an operator correcting the torch by hand next to the arc.

The XVC-750T with the XLP-850 pulsed LED keeps the contrast consistent before ignition and during welding.
