Dr. Tooran Tavangar joined Coanda in 2025, bringing extensive experience in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. Her expertise includes multi-phase pipe flow, rheological characteristics of suspension flow, combustion, and graphene formation.

Dr. Tavangar obtained her PhD in Civil Engineering from the Université de Sherbrooke, where she developed computational models for concrete pipe flow using computational fluid dynamics and the discrete element method. Upon graduation, she began working as a post-doctoral researcher.

Dr. Tavangar continues her post-doctoral research at the University of Windsor, focusing on modeling graphene formation in gas-phase synthesis, while also contributing her expertise to Coanda. She also holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology (Tehran Polytechnic) in the field of thermo-fluids.

The application of CFD to liquid flows with suspended solids can be especially useful in numerous water-based processes. One particular application was for sand separation in a manure handling system. Our client wanted to know whether impeller mixers would be able to keep fine sand particles in suspension.

Our simulations were able to predict the settling rate of these larger particles and thus the client was able to determine how often the pit would need to be manually cleaned out to remove the settled sand.

This year marks 30 years since the founding of Coanda. Three decades of engineering excellence, scientific curiosity, and close collaboration with clients across an ever-expanding range of industries and sectors. What started in 1996 as a two-person team working over a laser table in our founder’s basement has grown into a multi-disciplinary firm of more than 60 professionals across 3 locations. Along the way we’ve carried a commitment to rigour, practical innovation, and a people-first culture that remains at the heart of everything we do.

Our story is written by the scientists, engineers, technicians, project managers and support staff who turn complex challenges into elegant solutions and new opportunities for our clients. It’s also shaped by the suppliers, partners and clients who trusted us to deliver on safety, quality and performance, project after project, year after year.

To every colleague past and present, every client and partner who has travelled this path with us: thank you. Your expertise, feedback and partnership have defined our standards and propelled our growth.
Join us as we celebrate the people who made our first 30 years possible.

Many mining operations rely heavily on the conveyance of slurrified ore or tailings between the various stages of their processing flow sheets. Hydrotransport and slurry pipelines play a vital part in the profitability of the plant, whether transferring ore concentrate from the SAG or ball mills to the primary extraction stage, or feeding flotations cells, hydrocyclones or thickeners.

Members of our physical modelling team have written a white paper on Mass Spectrometry for Real-Time Gas Analysis:

Abstract
This paper presents a calibration approach for quadrupole mass spectrometry used in real-time gas analysis, with emphasis on correcting species-dependent ionization effects through empirically determined relative sensitivity factors. Using a certified span gas containing nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and helium, the method shows that calibrated measurements converge closely to known gas compositions and reproduce expected ambient air concentrations. The results demonstrate improved accuracy and reliability in time-resolved gas concentration measurements for industrial and research applications.

The residence time distribution (RTD) of piece of fluid-handling equipment like a tank, pipe, or reactor describes how much time fluid spends inside.

For example, in a batch mixer or ideal plug-flow reactor, all of the fluid spends the same amount of time in the vessel.

If we plot a distribution of fraction of fluid vs. the amount of time spent in the vessel, we get a spike corresponding to the residence time, as shown below (left).
On the other hand, for fluid flowing through an ideal continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR), some of the fluid that enters the tank goes through immediately (because the tank is perfectly mixed), but some spends a longer time. This means there is a distribution of time spent in the reactor over all of the fluid elements passing through, also as shown below (middle)...

Mingyu (Eric) obtained his B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta in 2016 and is a registered Professional Engineer with APEGA. He has over a decade experience working with oil sands products and processes.

Eric first joined Coanda for a co-op work term to assist experiment design, data analysis, and performance modelling/prediction of various tailings materials through benchtop characterization of their solids and pore water properties. After graduation he returned to Coanda to expand on his knowledge of fluid dynamics, optimizing mixing techniques including coagulation, flocculation and water treatment in both laboratory and pilot level pipeline systems.

He now manages projects that engineer and verify technologies which aim to improve reclamation of mining activities, ensuring these applications are scale-able and practical for commercial implementation. This involves direct collaboration with clients, stakeholders, and internal groups/teams to promote technical, monetary and timeline efficacy.

Bubbles matter.

In mining, bubbles separate the ore from the tailings during froth separation. Bubbles in a water- or slurry-filled pipe can cause pipe corrosion. In reactors, the size and distribution of bubbles can limit reaction rates. Bubbles cause pump wear.

According to a 2024 study by a group of researchers in China, the domestic cost of biochar burial levelized to approximately $90/t (net CO2). The cost of removing 1.0 Gt/yr, which researchers believe to be a realistic objective, would therefore be in the region of $90 billion annually. While that is an enormous expense to offset 2-3% of global CO2 emissions, it is eclipsed by the cost of direct air capture (DAC), currently estimated at about $500/t. For reference, the cost of offsetting global emissions at $90/t is $3.5 trillion, whereas at $500/t, the cost is about $20 trillion. Both of these figures are comparable to the gross domestic product of major global economies (UK: $3.4 trillion, 6th; China: $18 trillion, 2nd).
