BC Hydro surveyed people putting up Halloween displays and found that many weren’t concerned with electrical safety. Nearly 40% used decorations that were not rated for outdoor use, and a third ran cords near walkways or standing water.

You should always use lights and extension cords built for the outdoors, since indoor ones aren't made to withstand the rain. Use one cord long enough to reach the area that you’re decorating, rather than joining two together, because that connection isn't weatherproof and water usually gets inside. And remember to keep decorations off overhead power lines and away from the green utility boxes on lawns.

Congratulations to the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation on a successful 4th annual Charity Golf Classic at Mayfair Lakes Golf & Country Club, which raised $325,000 for post-secondary bursaries and youth-focused charities across Canada. Giving back is one of our core values at Mott, so it is great to see the community come together to support young people as they build their futures. Thank you to everyone who took part!

With autumn in full swing, storm season is on the way, and a standby generator is only useful if it starts when the power goes out. Regular testing and maintenance catch the problems that show up after months of sitting idle, such as a dead starting battery, stale fuel or a coolant leak. Our service team handles generator testing and maintenance for commercial buildings across BC, so give us a call if yours is overdue.

As we near our 100th Anniversary, we want to reflect on the people and projects that have helped get us to where we are today.

Peter Sawka, an electrical journeyman, has been a serviceman at Mott Electric’s downtown office since 2005. Interestingly, Peter’s father, Eugene, began working for Mott Electric when Peter was just two months old, making the company a household name for the Sawka family. Despite this, Peter’s father never encouraged him to become an electrician, and Peter chose to follow in his footsteps. Like Eugene, Peter is now the service manager for our Vancouver Office.

Dan Mott recently presented a $250,000 donation to the Burnaby Hospital & Community Foundation, inspired by the care he received from Dr. Zernial and the emergency department team. Thank you to the foundation for sharing the news, and to everyone at the hospital who looks after our community.

Once a year, all our staff donate to support a local charity they love through our Day of Giving, and we want to proudly highlight these incredible organizations.

This month, we're recognizing the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. As the largest voluntary health organization dedicated to blood cancer in Canada, LLSC funds lifesaving research and provides educational resources and support services to patients and their families. Their mission is to find cures and ensure access to treatment for all Canadians affected by blood cancer.
