English Bay Retrofitting Project

We recently completed the English Bay Retrofitting Project, delivering a comprehensive lighting upgrade designed to improve performance, durability, and visual comfort.

Prior to the retrofit, the existing spotlights displayed inconsistent color temperatures and light intensities, resulting in uneven illumination throughout the space. In addition, the exterior wall-mounted fixtures showed visible deterioration caused by prolonged exposure to the ocean’s salt-rich environment.

As part of the retrofit, we restored and repainted the exterior light fixtures, preparing them to better withstand the demanding coastal conditions. We also replaced and upgraded the spotlights to achieve a more consistent color temperature and balanced illumination throughout the space.

To further enhance the installation, honeycomb plates were incorporated to improve glare control, while bird spikes were added to help protect the fixtures and maintain the integrity of the installation.

As we get closer to completing our English Bay retrofit project, we’re excited to share some of the unique features that made this project special.

We were tasked with retrofitting the building’s original façade and lobby light fixtures, preserving their architectural character while upgrading their performance and functionality.

For the spotlights, we incorporated honeycomb accessories to improve glare control and added bird spikes to the upward-facing fixtures. Internally, the fixtures were completely modernized with new, more efficient components, all while maintaining the original exterior bodies and preserving the building’s design.

A great example of how thoughtful retrofitting can bring modern lighting technology into original architectural elements without losing their character.

Lighting that moves with the architecture.

We designed and delivered this custom red façade light fixture for Carwash Operation Company, creating a continuous illuminated wave that follows the building’s form and makes a bold architectural statement.

From dusk till dawn, the fixture transforms the façade into a striking visual signature.

Custom-built. Seamlessly integrated. Made to stand out.

Lighting that supports the space without competing with it.

As the lighting supply partner on this project, we contributed through value engineering and fixture cross-referencing, helping deliver the right lighting solutions while staying true to the project’s design intent.

UBC Chapel

Proxima has been selected to design the lighting for Epiphany Chapel at the University of British Columbia. Considering the ongoing needs specially during the covid era, the chapel have been planned to be converted into a dual-purpose facility that serves as both a classroom and a prayer place. With this in mind, The Proxima team designed a custom lighting system that can support both functions.

Weathervane sculpture
Riding high among the rooftops in Vancouver is an unusual sight that awaits the casual viewer looking upward from street to sky Copper sculpture made by the artist, Rodney Graham, as the philosopher, Erasmus, seated backwards on a horse reading a book, was illuminated by Proxima just before Christmas 2019.

Proxima was asked to illuminate and highlight this conceptual artwork through professional design. The major concerns were to avoid lighting pollution and lighting trespass for neighboring condos. The units’ residences live in levels above and also below the sculpture. Other concerns were sculpture materials and its rotation by the wind.

Finally, it was lit by outdoor LED floodlights emitting suitable SPD of light to render the shape and material of the weathervane. These fixtures are equipped with special lenses and shields to control the light rays.
Since then, every night it glows to joyfully communicate with visitors and neighbors.

In 2020 Proxima was retained to provide a lighting design for cosmetic surgery and skincare clinic on West 8th Ave, Vancouver BC.

The lighting design concept was to provide an energy-efficient, extremely glare free, serene, and neat illumination. Architectural downlights were used for general areas. As for the reception, a curved linear recessed luminaire was implemented to light up the counter. Wall-washers were used to highlight the sign on the wall and Darklans fixtures were selected to eliminate screen reflection for the staff.
