IUOE Local 115

IUOE Local 115 International Union of Operating Engineers Local 115 is based in BC with offices in Burnaby, Nanaimo

When workers face major workplace changes, having a union matters.

Recently, Business Representative Sean Maurer negotiated a Section 54 Adjustment Plan to support Local 115 members through the closure of their workplace. The plan includes severance provisions (above Employment Standards Act minimums), retraining opportunities, and other measures to help members navigate the tough transition ahead.

It’s a reminder that even during difficult times, Local 115 is there to ensure workers are treated fairly and have the support they deserve.

Today we stood in Solidarity with members of the GVRD Employees Union as they fight for safer working conditions and less contracting out. Our organizing truck also made it out for support!

Proud to see former Shop Steward, Dawn Pollard standing strong for a fair deal.

Please join us in congratulating Brother Jody Jeffries (left) on his appointment as Shop Steward at Heidelberg Materials' Sechelt Mine.

Jody was nominated by his coworkers and appointed by Business Representative Will Suelzle. Shop Stewards play a vital role in ensuring members have a voice on the job and a direct link to their Union.

Thank you, Jody, for stepping up to represent your fellow members. We look forward to working with you in your new role.

Last week we had the privilege of delivering training to WorkSafeBC’s crane enforcement team.

Over five days, we explored a wide range of topics including supervision, maintenance, inspections, rigging practices, and the operational realities of working around high-risk equipment.

These conversations are critical. Strong enforcement, effective training, and industry collaboration all play an important role in improving safety outcomes and raising standards across the province.

IUOE Local 115 appreciate the opportunity to work alongside the WorkSafeBC team and contribute to a shared goal: a safer, stronger, and more professional crane industry.

The best results come when regulators, employers, instructors, and workers are all moving in the same direction.

Proud to see another major milestone on a project our members helped build.

It’s exciting to see the first SkyTrain on the tracks as the Broadway Subway Project moves into its next phase.

A major milestone for a project built by skilled union labour and a glimpse of what’s to come for transit in Metro Vancouver.

Is that a bird? A plane? No, it’s the first SkyTrain on the Broadway Subway tracks!

Dynamic testing has started! This phase involves testing moving SkyTrains on the completed sections of track. This important step ensures that service will be safe and reliable.

At today’s retirement lunch for Dave De Sousa, we celebrated a career full of impact and memorable moments. From first organizing his workplace in 1999 to 7 years with the Local and nearly 20 years with the International, Dave never stopped organizing.

Dave always asked, “What am I doing today to advance the interests of Operating Engineers?” and he made sure members could provide for the ones they love.

Thank you, Dave, for your dedication, your mentorship, and your legacy. Enjoy your retirement!

When community organizations need a hand, Operating Engineers show up.

Recently, instructors and members from the IUOE Local 115 Training Association (IUOETA) partnered with Mossom Creek Hatchery & Education Centre and Amrize to help improve the 1 km access road leading to the facility.

IUOETA provided the equipment, operators, and expertise needed to resurface the road, and Amrize donated over 500 tonnes of material, helping improve access to a facility that has spent decades supporting salmon enhancement, environmental education, research, and watershed stewardship in our communities.

This project is a great example of skilled trades, industry, and community organizations working together to make a lasting impact.

If you're looking for something to do this summer, we encourage our members and their families to visit Mossom Creek Hatchery & Education Centre in Port Moody and take a drive up the newly improved road. The hatchery welcomes visitors every Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for Salmon Sunday.

Thank you to Mossom Creek Hatchery & Education Centre, Amrize, and everyone involved in making this project a success.
