Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible moms and mother figures who build, support, inspire, and hold everything together; both at home and beyond!

We could not have come this far without you! Today (and ideally everyday) we celebrate you. 💐

PS. If your loved ones haven’t already given you flowers, now is your chance to poke them! 😂

At WHM, we recognize that this May 5th, red dresses are not just symbols; they are powerful, visceral reminders of the vibrant lives taken too soon and the families forever changed...

Each dress represents a daughter, a mother, a sister, or a friend from Indigenous, 2SLGBTQI+, and gender diverse communities who should rightfully still be here today, with us.

We believe that the red reflects the blood that was shed - yes, but it also speaks much more powerfully to the strength and resilience of those who remain. We stand in the silence left behind and transform it into a collective call for justice, healing, and accountability.

Today, we remember their names, honour their spirits, and commit ourselves to a future where no more sisters are stolen.

May the Fourth be with you ALL✨💫

At WHM, we like to think that our great engineering has a bit of the Force behind it; precision, balance, and structures that stand the test of time. 😉

A toast to strong foundations, smart design, and projects that hold the galaxy together!

Building for the future requires a commitment to the present.
WHM Structural Engineers is proud to announce the submission of our 2026 Embodied Carbon Action Plan (ECAP) as part of our continued commitment to the SE2050 Challenge.

We support the SEI vision that all structural engineers must understand, reduce, and ultimately eliminate embodied carbon in their projects by 2050. By incorporating sustainable strategies at the structural level, we are driving meaningful change from the ground up.

Weyerhaeuser invited the WHM team to tour their Parallam manufacturing facility on Annacis Island yesterday!

The visit began with an overview of the manufacturing process, starting with wood veneers, followed by resin application, pressing the members, and finally cutting the beams to their specified widths and depths. It was impressive to see the level of engineering, precision, and quality control involved in producing each structural member.

One of the highlights of the tour was observing live load testing of the beams to confirm they meet the required performance standards. Opportunities to see structural members tested to failure in real time are rare and provided valuable insight into the rigorous testing behind these materials.

The tour was highly informative for the team and served as a great reminder of the research, testing, and manufacturing expertise that support the materials we specify in our projects. It is always valuable to step away from the office and see firsthand how these structural products are manufactured.

WHM Calgary - Our New Office!

WHM is leveling up in Calgary! Our new office launch represents more than just a space; it’s a SERIOUS growth spurt so legendary, even spreadsheets are asking for autographs.

With Kara Lincoln at the helm, our Calgary office is set to deliver exceptional structural engineering solutions across concrete, steel, wood, masonry, and precast projects. From public institutions and residential buildings to complex multi-use developments, Calgary clients can expect innovative, collaborative, and sustainable design expertise.

This expansion marks a milestone for WHM, and we’re excited to continue building stronger, smarter, and better in the heart of Alberta.

The Knucwentwecw Society Cultural Centre is a purpose built, single-storey community gathering space with a mezzanine, designed to showcase the performance, efficiency, and beauty of mass timber construction in Williams Lake, British Columbia. The approximately 9,800 sq.ft. suspended structure (including roof overhangs) combines cross-laminated timber (CLT), glulam, and conventional framing to deliver a warm, durable, and high-performing building.

A defining feature is the ceiling structure over the smudging room, which expresses a striking reciprocal frame: a self-supporting structural system composed of interlocking beams that mutually support one another without the need for a central column. This feature highlights both the structural ingenuity and visual elegance achievable with mass timber while supporting the cultural function of the space.
The result is a contemporary mass timber structure that balances architectural presence with practical engineering performance. Clean structural lines, efficient material use, and careful detailing create a space that is both visually compelling and functionally resilient. This project reflects a commitment to sustainable building practices, regional material expression, and respectful, community-focused design.

Built in partnership with , , and delivered by Lauren Bros Construction, this project reflects shared values of community, culture, and sustainable building.

A mid-century rebel, holding its ground firm.

Set into a south-sloping Vancouver neighbourhood this 1952 Ron Thom–designed home is tucked beneath cedar, maple, and dogwood trees. Reworked by Thom himself in 1982, the house has now been carefully restored; stronger, smarter, and unmistakably itself.

The 240 m² reconstruction delivers major seismic, structural, and thermal upgrades while preserving what matters: staggered cedar roof planes, the iconic concrete brick hearth, and a spatial organization that still captures generous southern light.

Rooms are thoughtfully reconfigured, storage refined, and joinery rebuilt to work hard without drawing attention. Clerestories remain high, glazing opens wide, and the house leans confidently toward a new pool terrace, pool house, and outdoor living area.

Materials stay local and honest: retained cedar, fir, and concrete brick set the tone, Douglas fir windows are remade and expanded and end-grain fir floors meet radiant brick tile that flows outdoors.

Mid-century soul. West Coast craft. Quiet confidence. Still cool.

Clean Lines.
Solid Engineering.

Exciting News from WHM!

We’re proud to share that multiple WHM projects have been selected as part of BC’s Mass Timber Demonstration Program, an initiative supporting innovative, sustainable, and forward-thinking building practices across the province.

These selected projects showcase the potential of mass timber and hybrid construction to reduce carbon impact, advance design excellence, and shape the future of the built environment in British Columbia.

The three projects currently being highlighted reflect WHM’s ongoing commitment to engineering innovation, collaboration, and sustainable solutions. We’re honoured to work alongside our partners and contribute to projects that help move the industry forward.
