An Interesting Historical Labour Movement Story...

In 1937, Trinidad put a woman on trial for daring to organize workers, and she still would not back down.

Elma Francois was born in St Vincent and moved to Trinidad, where she became a leading voice in the labour movement and co-founded the Negro Welfare Cultural and Social Association. She was the first woman tried for sedition in Trinidad and Tobago, a charge brought against her for organizing workers during a period of widespread unrest. She was acquitted and continued her work for the rest of her life.

Her name is far less known than many of the men remembered from this era of Caribbean labour history, even though her contribution helped shape the movements that followed. Honoring her means widening the story of who fought for the Caribbean we know today.
