Why are more Calgary homeowners choosing side discharge systems?

The answer might surprise you.

Traditional top discharge air conditioners have been cooling Calgary homes for decades, and they’re still a great choice for many homes.

But side discharge inverter systems have changed the game.

They can offer quieter operation, variable capacity, a smaller footprint, excellent cooling performance and, when installed as a heat pump, the ability to provide both heating AND cooling.

But does that mean everyone should install one?

Future WCM technicians in training! 🔧

We had a couple of young helpers spend the day at the WCM shop learning how furnaces work, getting familiar with the tools and seeing what a career in the skilled trades can look like. They stripped an entire furnace down to just the cabinet!

At Western Canadian Mechanical, we believe in teaching the next generation that working with your hands, solving real problems and learning a skilled trade are things to be proud of.

There was plenty of hands-on learning, a few lessons from the experienced technicians and, naturally, a pizza and Slurpee celebration after a job well done.

This was our first annual WCM Kids Technician Day.

Here’s to building confidence, curiosity and tomorrow’s skilled tradespeople, one future technician at a time.

Thinking about a heat pump for your Calgary home?

Before comparing brands or equipment sizes, it helps to understand two important concepts:

The mechanical balance point is the outdoor temperature at which a heat pump may need support from another heat source to maintain the home’s heating load.

The financial balance point considers operating cost. It helps determine when running the heat pump makes financial sense compared with the home’s backup heating system.

These balance points are not the same for every property. The correct recommendation depends on the home’s heat loss, equipment performance, electricity and gas costs, ductwork, airflow, electrical capacity and the homeowner’s comfort goals.

That is why WCM does not recommend heat pumps based on square footage alone.
