Several things I’ve learned being an apprentice carpenter and project mgr
1. Be disciplined with documenting everything on a project from work changes, verbal RFI (request for Information) and even a phone call Summary with a trade
2. The team will respect you if you come to site and see things on the ground level
3. It helps to have done the work first hand so you know how long it will take and can give feedback effectively
4. Make the work ready for the next team
5. Inspect the work before the trade contractor leaves the site.
6. Have a sign off before a team mobilizes from site that ensures their work was done as on the drawings
7. People will hate the planning process but appreciate the plan’s results
8. Always bring money in.
9. Before you do extra work. Get the change order approved in writing
10. Organize all paperwork, invoices, contracts in one organized place for your team to work together
11. Carry a note pad and measuring tape wherever you go
